In a dystopian future where virtually, everyone is on-line almost all the time because the real world is rather bleak, a recently deceased video game creator has created a contest where the prize is lottery-like money. The contest is a dream come true for Wade (aka Parzival when online), who is a videogame junkie and an admirer of the creator. The contest is an online quest to find a hidden Easter egg which could be anywhere in the online universe which consists of multiple planets. The plot revolves around the contest and how Wade and his friends fare in the contest and the obstacles they face. His friends, by the way, are online also and Wade has never met them in person. There are many references to 1980s video games and movies since the contest creator had a fascination for that time period. In order to do well in the contest, you have to know all the lines in certain classic 80s movies and be an expert player in 80s video games. While a lot of people seem to love this book, I just thought it was okay, but then again, I’m not into video games or the Dungeons and Dragons culture in which the video games are infused. I suspect that people who are, will probably enjoy this book. I might watch the movie, but I am not going to read the sequel, “Ready Player Two.”

One of my all time favorites!
Since the first time I watched the movie Ready Player One, all the way back in 2018, it has built me up as a person very significantly. I thought that the movie would end up being 1,000 times better than the book, since I have watched the movie so many times, and loved it even more every time I watched it. But the book, I'd say, is incomparable to anything on its own. The way Cline depicts Wade, I can see myself in him through and through, and find his perspective very relatable as the weird kid and underdog. There are moments when I've seen thoughts in him that I only ever thought I had. The writing of this book sets up the setting really elaborately, and I think that Cline was the best writer that there could be to put this story into words. He effectively used a bunch of techniques, like foreshadowing, and puts a lot of effort into the details of the story that may seem insignificant until they resurfaced later. One of the parts that really stuck out to me was, towards the end, there's a moment where after his identity was revealed to the world, Wade was debating whether anything was worth it, and was thinking about the exact things he would think as he was falling to his death after taking his life. While he didn't end up doing it, and it's not a main part of the story at all, it really helped me establish him as a person in my mind. Also, as a bit of a nerd, I personally loved all the niche references to 80's media. Another thing that helps me relate to Wade is that exactly, he's very interested in following Halliday's interest in the culture of the past. Since I got nearly reference made, that's another tidbit that really kept me reeled in, and I'd totally recommend this book to anyone a bit weird looking for a great new read. Happy Gunting!

Amazing and original
Loved the 80s and 90s dive, the plot and the world (in and out of the Oasis) - too bad the movie and the sequel are so-so... but this one is a gem!

Loved it
Ready Player One, by Ernest Cline, is a science fiction book set in a dystopian future, in the year 2045. Its story follows Wade, a teenager looking for a great fortune left behind in the virtual world of the Oasis. The only thing is, he’s not the only person who wants it. When I picked this book to read, I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I thought that I would get through it fast and that it wouldn't be a big deal, but to my surprise, I ended up enjoying this book very much. I think that the book can be enjoyed by all age groups, and not just because of its story. It has lots of 80s pop culture references to keep an older reader engaged in the story, and I can see younger readers enjoying the plot line in general, even if they don’t understand all of the references. Even if they don't, there is usually small text at the bottom of the page to explain the history and context of said reference. The main character, Wade, and the friends that he meets along the way are hunting for the keys and clues that will help them find the fortune that the creator of the Oasis, Hallidiy, left behind after he died. It states in his will that whoever finds the ultimate easter egg claims all of the money. The style of the book is very dystopian, and neon, almost. Consider it retro-futurism. Themes in the book only help elevate its story, with themes like teamwork, and communication. So overall, I think that this is a book that is worth many people's time, and if you are willing to dive into a not-so-distant future involving clues, friends, enemies, and 80s pop culture, then you are bound to enjoy this book.

Epic Sci-Fi Adventure Thriller 4.5 stars
Readers toggle between the real and virtual world as they follow Wade Watts on his perilous hunt for fortune in Ernest Cline’s sci-fi thriller Ready Player One. Ernest plays with elements from multiple genres making this sci-fi with a fantasy, YA and adventure flair. I can’t decide what I loved most about this out-of-the-box read…the incredible virtual utopian setting of OASIS, the unforgettable collection of character misfits, or the non-stop adrenaline rush from the action-packed plot. Reading this book is as addicting as your favorite game “just one more chapter…one more level…” Gamers will be especially pleased with this book, but you certainly don’t have to be a video game fanatic to enjoy it. Wil Wheaton narrates the audio version and if you’re someone who prefers the audio option, you’re in for a treat. With the amount of gamer talk and tech references, it’s also a great book to hybrid read if you aren’t overly familiar with gaming. With themes of friendship, connection, and high tech vs. reality, Ready Player One is one epic adventure you’ll find yourself replaying in your mind over and over again long after the final page.

Great Read
In the year 2045, the planet is on the edge of chaos and collapse, but people find hope in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by James Halliday. When Halliday passes away, he promises his immense fortune to the first person to discover a digital Easter egg that's hidden somewhere in the OASIS. When young Wade Watts joins the contest, he discovers that he is becoming an unlikely hero in a reality bending treasure hunt through a fantastical world of mystery, discovery and danger. This would be an excellent book on the best seller list because it is a compulsive reading book. Cline spins his dystopian quest adventure with supreme vitality, vigorous and unabashed nerdiness. Cyberpunk collides with pop culture nostalgia and would be a great addition to the best seller list.
