Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers are up against a powerful vigilante group with an eye on vengeance in this stunning new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author.“We're going to murder people who need to be murdered.” So begins a press release from a mysterious group known only as “The Five,” shortly after a vicious predator is murdered in San Francisco. The Five is made up of vigilante killers who are very bored…and very rich. They target the worst of society—rapists, murderers, and thieves—and then use their unlimited resources to offset the damage done by those who they've killed, donating untraceable Bitcoin to charities and victims via the dark net. The Five soon become popular figures in the media …though their motives may not be entirely pure. After The Five strike again in the Twin Cities, Virgil Flowers and Lucas Davenport are sent in to investigate. And they soon have their hands full—the killings are smart and carefully choreographed, and with no apparent direct connection to the victims, the killers are virtually untraceable. But if anyone can destroy this group, it will be the dynamic team of Davenport and Flowers.

One of my favorite series

The Prey series by John Sandford is one of my favorite series of all time, 32 books later and I loved it! I love Lucas and Virgil working together. This book has it all, an interesting case to solve, plenty of action and the humor that I've come to expect and love. I hope this series continues for a long time because I'm already ready for the next one!

Lucas and Virgil Together Again!

So happy that this book had both Lucas and Virgil working together again! Wonderful plot! Multi-Bizillionaires decide to band together and get rid of (as in kill) people they decide are really bad people. No Judge, no Trial and no Jury! And they are the executioners...and they choose how these chosen ones will be killed. The first Execution goes off without a hitch. But a mistake is made with the 2nd Execution. That Execution happens in Minneapolis and that gets Lucas and Virgil involved! And gets the FBI involved too. Now they are off and running, chasing clues and possible killers from Minnesota, to the West Coast and then to the East Coast. It's a great ride!! One of the very best of Lucas and Virgil! Get ready to read many hours into the night!

Together Again For the First Time

They are back together! Finally, in Righteous Prey , they are equal partners once again, not just visiting each other’s books. Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers aka That F…, well y’all know the rest of his nickname, finally team up. Even if the pairing is just for one book every now and again, that is just fine and dandy since their individual series books are terrific. A money hungry psycho finds five other like minded people at a Bitcoin convention, except they have already made their billions, or in one case, millions. They are like minded in ways other than just money. They decide to eliminate some people, ones who really need to be eliminated. No loss to society, in fact society will greatly benefit; in small ways-a rapist or in big ways- a famous fascist. The first murder is virtually ignored despite the press release and the number 1 on his forehead. No surprise, he’s a San Francisco Street person. It’s when the The Five up their game and start murdering rich people or politicians that federal law enforcement becomes involved. The victims are true dregs, but when The Five’s FB pages starts getting more attention than the latest cat video, people really start paying attention. Since one of the murders takes place in Minneapolis, Davenport and Flowers are called in to assist the FBI. Davenport, by this time of his career is a Deputy Federal Marshall without portfolio, working on what he wants to work on or on cases some powerful political friends would like him to work on, while Virgil has a rural assignment with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. There are no fantastic, hard to believe twists and turns, except maybe with how you view The Five. Isn’t there a part deep inside of all of us that tends toward vigilantism, until our better selves slap our foreheads and whispers “what in the world are you thinking” and reasserts our humanity? Lucas and Virgil are one of the best partnerships in most any crime series I have read. I find their investigations realistic. They depend on solid investigative techniques, but they also are stymied or bored or make enemies etc. Not too different from real investigators. The Five get their say throughout the book. We read of their self-justification, their preparations, their egotism, their paranoia. It’s fascinating to follow their disintegration. Sandford is a sneaky wordsmith who loves to play with words. For example, the first victim is named Duck Wiggins. What would be the perfect word before that name? One of the downsides of a long running series is that there are too many characters who are developed over the course of the series and they can’t all visit the latest book. Yes visit, characters are real to me. Sandford made the smart move in Righteous Prey, keeping the book purely Davenport and Flowers, except for a few family members. For those who are worrying, Virgil’s agent finally comes through. It’s amazing all of the advice he now receives about writing and publishing. Sounds suspiciously autobiographical. There is a very thoughtful ending to Righteous Prey, it brings up some issues. Pay attention to Frankie and Weather. They might hardly be onstage, but when they are, they are powerful women with something to say.

Another great read from Sandford

What's better than a Lucas Davenport book? Or a Virgil Flowers book? The answer of course is - a new book with both of John Sandford's fantastic protagonists. Righteous Prey has just released. This is #32 and the series hasn't lost any ground over the years. Instead it's has just better and better. Sandford opens the book with a heinous crime. Five wealthy billionaires have decided to pass judgement on those they deem as a blight on society. But they're not being quiet about the murders. Instead they send missives to the media, celebrating their actions and encouraging others to take a stand. (Sounds frighteningly familiar doesn't it?) "We’re going to murder people who need to be murdered." Lucas is now a US Marshall and Virgil is with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). They've worked together before and both singly and together they have high solve rates. And they both despise the FBI, who also have been called in. This pair have their own way of investigating and sometimes a few corners are cut... The banter and dialogue in Sandford's books is razor sharp and so much fun to read. The tension never lets up in this latest. The plotting is absolutely fantastic. Lucas and Virgil are on the right track, but keep missing the perpetrators by a sliver. The clues, the intuition and sometimes just luck all play a part on the way to the final pages. There's a nice surprise in the final pages. Fans of this series will appreciated a cameo from Kidd. And Virgil now has a side gig - and I'm very curious to see if there's more to it in future books. An easy five stars. I'm always looking forward to the next book from John Sandford. Keep your eyes out for Dark Angel - the second Letty Davenport book coming out in April 2023.

Entertaining book

This was a well-written, entertaining book. It was fast-paced and hard to put down. I wanted to find out what was going to happen next and how it would turn out. This is a great series and a great author. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading another book in this series as well as others by this author.

Great addition to the series

I’m rally loving this buddy act that Lucas and Virgil have going on! They rally balance each other but they are also hilarious when they are together. I feel like this book already is setting up the next one. It was heavy on the politics but didn’t feel over the top.

Two action heroes in one excellent book!

32 great Prey books by John Sandford and this one may be the best yet! Both our action-oriented Prey heroes, Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers, star in this fast-paced thriller. Zipping around the U.S., they and the FBI pursue multiple assassins in a variety of situations.. Davenport’s and Flowers’ reputations for solving complex mysteries bring them to the forefront of this latest novel. I binge-read this book. Couldn’t put it down with the action unfolding page by page all the way to the end. Lucas and Virgil are laugh-aloud funny and true to character throughout with an extra treat of seeing Virgil’s latest venture unfold. Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the ARC and the opportunity to read this exciting book. .

Davenport & Flowers are great as usual

RIGHTEOUS PREY is the 32nd Prey book by John Sandford, and this is one of the better ones. Both Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers are in this, working together to solve a murder spree. A group calling themselves “The Five” are slaughtering people that they (and many others) consider detrimental to society. The victims are considered to be a**holes and consist of rapists, thugs, etc. This twist makes The Five sympathetic characters, despite their murderous impulses. It seemed there was slightly more Virgil content than Lucas. The banter between the two is as good as it ever was, with lots of ribbing about Lucas’ clothes and Virgil’s burgeoning career as an author. The characters are aging, yes, but also growing and adding layers to both of their career paths. I hope they continue in law enforcement, because I feel that a lot of their appeal would be lost if Virgil was a full-time author and Lucas decided to retire (the horror!). There is a new character introduced in the novel; her name is Jasmine Green and she is a cop assigned to help the duo out once they reach a certain point in the investigation. She starts out as a character that I wasn’t sure I was going to like, but as the plot progressed, I was happy she was added to the novel. Sandford does tend to drop new characters in here and there, and I hope we see Green again in the future. Sandford’s ability to create a gripping plot is legendary. He never runs out of new ideas and he puts his own special twist out there so you never know how things are going to end. I read through this book quickly and slowly at the same time (is this even possible?) because I wanted to find out what was going to happen to The Five, yet I didn’t want the book to end. Sandford takes too much time between books, if you ask me. This sentiment among his immense following proves what a fantastic writer he is. I felt that there were no slow portions of the book. As each member of The Five is introduced to the reader, they emerge as intelligent, sardonic, and Type-A people. We get a brief background on them and learn their motivation, which turns out to be a good reason for the murder spree. The reader is invited to think about whether this murky “reasoning” is a good or a bad thing. Not that murder should be condoned – but we have all pictured someone famous and thought Gee, the world would be much better off without him”. This unique spin is another detail that made RIGHTEOUS PREY a bonafide thriller. Sandford fans should be raving about this book! Lucas and Virgil are beloved characters and this latest installation is a sure winner. I cannot choose what I liked best about this book – the always funny conversation between the two, or the fast-paced plot that gripped my interest from the first page. Which did you like best?
