Dolly Parton!

Written by Dolly Parton! In the 1990s there was a movie with River Phoenix, this book reminded me of that movie. I really enjoyed the storyline and most of the characters. The book was very well written and thought out and probably based on some of Dolly Parton's own experience in the industry. I've been waiting for a book like this and hope it will turn into a series. Full five stars for sure!

Suspenseful story of up and coming country star

I enjoyed seeing how an up and coming country singer could break into the business, both trying on her own and then after the helpful intervention of a very Dolly-like mentor. (Definitely a built-in role for Dolly if they ever get the movie made.) AnnieLee's story was tense as she tried to outrun her past. I'm just not sure why the bad guys weren't more decisive in their actions. I liked the sweet romance between AnnieLee and Ethan. I also enjoyed seeing her song writing process as she poured all her hopes and dreams into them and used her experiences from the past to give them power.

Fun quick read with a some danger!

AnnieLee Keyes is running away from her past toward her musical dreams in Nashville. Ethan Blake sees her perform in a dive bar and is riveted enough to try to get retired country legend Ruthanna Ryder to come hear AnnieLee sing. It seems AnnieLee’s dreams of stardom have a real chance of coming true, but not if her past catches up to her and destroys everything… The steady pace and short chapters made this a good summer poolside read. I could put it down and pick it back up anytime, sometimes days or even a week later. The characters were likable, and the snarky/fiesty banter was enjoyable. This is marketed as a thriller, but it was inconsistently mysterious for a long time. The prologue definitely set the story up as a thriller but during AnnieLee’s rise the tone was much lighter, with only a few mysterious hints about danger in her past. Interspersed in this tale of country music stardom are short thrilling scenes until the last third of the book, which had consistent tension. Overall this was a light, easy read with a little bit of danger/drama.

Good Reading

Dolly Parton’s written a book? With James Patterson? Sold. I picked up this book because it was highly recommended. I can honestly say I’ve never read anything else by James Patterson and I was a bit skeptical going into this one. I wanted to like it because Dolly Parton is well…Dolly Parton. The writing is decent. It moved along rather well and kept my interest, but the chapters are very short, so it has no choice but to go quickly. I liked Ruthanna and could see Dolly Parton all over that character. I could hear her in the character’s voice and mannerisms, so that was great. I liked the interplay between AnnieLee and Ethan, too. They made a good couple. That said, I wasn’t a fan of AnnieLee. Her trajectory is rather…it took a lot to suspend my disbelief. It’s like she never does manage a wrong step with her career. She has talent, that’s not to be argued, but she gets a lot of breaks a lot of others wouldn’t get. I had a hard time with the suspense portion of the book, too. At times, it was too vague and at others, seemed like it didn’t fit. Maybe it was just me, but it felt like two books put together and cobbled into one. There seemed to be a lot of repetition in the book, too. That said, there’s a sweet romance between AnnieLee and Ethan. I liked that. And there’s a CD of music that goes along with the book that’s Parton’s music, which is fantastic. If you’re looking for a mystery and a romance that’s got a touch of country, then this might be the one for you. originally posted at long and short reviews

A delightful story that pulls you in and keeps you

First, this is the first book I've read by James Patterson. I know, strange, right? Second, while I don't like country music (don't listen to it at all) Dolly Parton is such an icon that I knew I had to at least try the story out. It definitely has that country flair one would expect, with a story line that is easy to read. It's easy to see Dolly's influence on the character Ruthanna (5'2" and yet casts a 6 foot shadow...hello!), the story isn't ultimately about her. It's about AnnieLee and her grit and determination to make it somehow, someway, and no one, and I do mean No One will get in her way, including the secrets she's trying to keep, including even herself. It's a fast paced narrative that keeps you rooting for AnnieLee, no matter the twists and turns that keep popping up. A delightful story that pulls you in and keeps you engaged. *I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. This review is my own opinion*

An Interesting & Entertaining Read

A little different from the books I usually read, but the I looked forward to the combination of authors Dolly Parton and James Patterson. AnnieLee Keyes finds music in everything that she sees. When she persuades the bartender at The Cat’s Paw to let her sing, she is thrilled by the reaction from the crowd, especially as she was singing songs that she had composed. At the bar, she meets Ethan Blake, a guitarist with Ruthanna Ryder’s the band. Ruthanna is a country music queen who has retired from performing, but still writes her own music; music just for her. From hitchhiking with a trucker to sleeping in a park, AnnieLee is determined to succeed but naturally there are those who would take advantage of her youth and talent. I found myself following the story and wondering if I was getting a glimpse into some of what Dolly went through on her way to becoming a music legend. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)

A country music Cinderella story

AnnieLee Keyes is determined to make it in Nashville. She’s arrived in town with no money, no place to stay, and nothing but sheer determination to get her through. She manages to get an opportunity to perform at The Cat’s Paw, a local dive bar where she catches the attention of Ethan Blake. Ethan is former military, part-time back-up player for Ruthanna Ryder, and part-time aspiring musician. He sees something special in AnnieLee and convinces his boss to give her a chance. Ruthanna Ryder is a country music legend. Although she’s retired she continues to write and record—songs nobody is ever intended to hear. At Ethan’s insistence, Ruthanna goes to listen to AnnieLee. Impressed with the young singer, Ruthanna agrees to take her under her wing and help her achieve her dreams. But AnnieLee has a dark past that is looming over her. It’s only a matter of time before she’s forced to confront the life she fled from. Will she be able to realize her dreams or will her nightmares prevail? Run, Rose, Run is a country music Cinderella story with a Dolly Parton-esque fairy godmother you had no idea you needed in your life. It’s an easy, enjoyable read with a down-to-earth main character. Run, Rose, Run is available everywhere. *I received a copy of Run, Rose, Run from Little Brown and Company and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Enjoyable Read

An enjoyable book of blending the mystery writing of James Patterson and the fun life of Dolly Parton. You could just picture Dolly as Rose, a young girl who sets her goals on becoming a country music star. You do not want to miss reading this book. Thanks to Little Brown and Company publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this book. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys these two people who have combined their excellent talents.
