giving your own voice

Say Something! by Peter H. Reynolds I am starting to really love this author, i have found it in the same classroom each year, and with each title i find that they are inspirational and should be in every school, if not classroom. The art work is simple and can be its own connection to young readers. Their simplicity helps not only with connections but encourages the students to create their own art. This book more than others talks about standing up for yourself, standing up for others, standing up for change. This book has no better time than now. To help address many social issues, and teaching the me generation to see and connect with others

Say Something is a book of few words, but with a BIG message! This colorful book is filled with adorable and endearing pictures. It encourages children to share their ideas with the world through art, music, words. It encourages kindness and peace, as well as sticking up for someone else. It encourages children to speak up if they are angry, happy, grateful, or have an idea. This wonderful book inspires children to speak their truth.

Awesome book!

Say Something is a picture book that explores the many ways we can use our voice to make a difference. Everyday, we are given the opportunity to say something with our words, our actions, or in more creative ways. Although this book does not bring attention to one, large, social issue, it can be applicable to a variety of social situations that the readers may face in their lifetime. One example brought up by the author was an issue of bullying, he encourages readers to speak up if they see a peer or stranger being bullied by someone. This is a real world example that some young readers may be able to relate to and can help readers to understand a scenario why it is important to say something. Readers are also inspired to speak up when they see any injustice and to advocate for peace among all people. Say Something promotes the idea of using our voice to young readers. This book is general in representation. The main illustrated character we see is a young black girl. However, there are several other illustrated characters we see that are a variety of races and genders. There are boys who stick up for themselves and their feelings, a girl scientist, and a variety of girls and boys who are protesting peace. The book’s diversity comes from its images. This book is relatable to a wide variety of people, however, I did not see any inclusion of disabilities in the illustrations. Although I understand this was not an intentional choice, it would have been a great addition to an already amazing book.
