Absolutely Adorable!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I started this one as my gym read to distract me while I died on the stairmaster and this one was perfect for that! Highlights: 💪 Amy’s writing style is so hilarious — there were multiple moments I just laughed out loud 💪 Crystal and Scott’s gym rivalry and banter were so fun to read 💪 Loved the representation of Crystal as not only a curvy woman but also a fitness influencer 💪 Some very insightful perspectives on what it means to be healthy and some of the impacts of social media 💪 Very cute romance overall I definitely enjoyed this one and have realized that I LOVE Amy Lea’s books. She feels so slept on!

Cliché and obnoxious

I read this book a couple months ago and needless to say I can not get over how generally disgusting I find some of the themes of this book, I don’t generally say this as I have read books with much more explicit themes. I still can’t get over the fact that this book is incest by marriage, their grand parents are getting married for goodness sakes that is legally Incest. Not to mention the fact that half of the contence in this book is cliche and over used already. Save your time read something better.

A middle schooler found a thesaurus

The book reads like a middle school romantic found a thesaurus and went ham. This is a smorgasbord of platitudes and cliches. There's an overwhelming amount of pop culture references that feel forced. The main character is supposed to be almost 30 but has the maturity of a teenager. The conflict is self induced and the theme of body positivity and acceptance is cringey and obnoxious. The Themes themselves are fine. It's how it's executed is the problem. Don't read this book. Save yourself the time, money and effort.

A gorgeous romcom

REVIEW * Anxiety, body-shaming * Crystal Chen is a curvy fitness influencer and personal trainer. When hot but smug firefighter Scott Ritchie repeatedly steals her favourite gym equipment, it becomes all-out war as the nemeses wind each up. With so much sexual tension, it's soon clear there's more going on than them just being gym enemies. But when Crystal finds out her grandmother is going to marry Scott's grandfather, their proximity means their chemistry starts to bubble over, and Crystal realises there's much more underneath Scott's muscular façade. This was an enemies-to-lovers slow-burn that really pays off. I really enjoyed their pettiness at the beginning, even though it could have lasted a little longer. Crystal felt authentic, written with sensitivity and acknowledging both her strengths and her flaws. I loved the fact that Crystal and Scott really grew their friendship before they took the next step in their relationship. Scott was adorable, but also cheeky, and I particularly loved his banter and vulnerability. I appreciated the discussion about diet culture, fitness, body respect, and particularly the way online hate and cyberbullying affect people. Crystal did frustrate me at times, especially in her reaction to Scott's attempts to help. But I really loved her eureka moment and the gorgeous (and inventive) conflict resolution. Mel was a good friend, and I loved that she, Tara, and her father weren't afraid to challenge some of Crystal's self-sabotaging behaviour. Though I read this series out of order, knowing what was coming for Tara and Trevor just made me love this book even more. Now, knowing more about Mel, I'm even more excited to read her story. Amy Lea's books have quickly become a one-click purchase for me, and this was another gorgeous read.

Loved the ending and a big fan of Scottie!

Crystal Chen is ready to break the silence on what society deems “ideal and perfect”. As a curvy fitness influencer, she wants to promote body positivity and self-love. Show others that she is strong and capable no matter her size, race, or gender. As a certified personal trainer, Crystal knows how powerful she can be. Her loyal clients, fitness newbies, and even the gym-rat-frat-bros love her! She is one with her gym and knows all the best spots for optimal recording and overall exercise enjoyment. It must have been a freak accident when a new face decided to steal her favorite squat rack and refuse to move when she had already claimed her place. Crystal would make sure the Squat Rack Theif would rue the day he crossed her! Hunky firefighter Scottie Ritchie is the new kid at the gym, dropping in and creating chaos right away. He got a new gym membership and a new gym nemesis all in one day! Over time, the jabs between Scottie and Crystal escalate… little do they know that the gym isn’t their only connection. When Scottie is running late for his grandfather's engagement party, the last thing he expects is to find himself seated next to his new enemy. Sparks will fly and memories will be made as these enemies turn into something a little better. First time reading a nemesis to lovers and I was excited! I dropped a star because this book had me all over the place mentally. The overall message and the evolution of characters at the end are great. The representation of a curvy and biracial character was awesome to read too. Also, you can’t help but kind of fall in love with Scottie. What I didn’t love was how certain parts of this read were very frustrating. I found Crystal to be very selfish and/or childish at times and was always happy when Mel and/or Tara stepped in to knock some sense into her. There are a lot of side characters with specific quirks that help you decipher who is who throughout the book which is a big plus. Overall there were a lot of up and down for me. The ending though made it all worth it! Loved the very last chunk of the book and felt very pleased with how it flowed. Good book, but be prepared to want to put it down or throw it from time to time.

Insightful

This was a cute romance. Crystal and Scott were a likeable couple and I enjoyed getting to know them and their families. What I liked more than the romance, though, was the message to be comfortable with who you are and not constantly seek the acceptance of others, which is a hard lesson to learn. The “subtle racism” issue is also something I’ve dealt with and learned to work around. This book isn’t for everyone but I enjoyed it and learned a little about myself in the process.

So sweet and insanely powerful

I had the pleasure of reading Exes and O’s first and immediately knew I had to go back to where it all started. Set On You is such a beautifully written push and pull novel between what we know in our heads and what we feel in our hearts. Crystal considers herself a decent, understanding, and respectable human being. As a fitstagrammer, she shares fitness tips, body positive messages, and all around confidence boosters to her followers. So what did she possibly do to deserve the likes of Scott – her newfound gym nemesis and a calendar worthy Boston Firefighter. After stealing her turn at the squat rack, she can’t seem to shake this guy! He blocks her path when she is working with clients, competes with her unprovoked, and is an all around menace! After an unexpected escalation ignited by a mishap with her phone, Crystal is satisfied if she never has to see him again, until an unexpected commonality forces them back together – their grandparents are getting married! Determined to get along in the name of family, Crystal finds herself becoming more and more smitten until a sweet gesture for her followers turns into a troll batted nightmare. Like most readers, I enjoy the overall story but I also find solace in the author’s underlining intentions. Amy consistently sprinkled the message about fat shaming and gave new perspectives to common misconceptions. Her portrayal of body shaming, trolling, and societal standards was not something that is unfamiliar but definitely something that needed to be brought to light. I loved her point that we are made to feel that we should be a certain way, look a certain way, succeed in a certain light and we are less than if we don’t. We are also at the mercy of the proverbial light switch so the moment society decides those things are still not acceptable but corporate deems them marketable, we should be accepting, happy, and celebrating what society has deemed our less than qualities. How does that NOT mess with someone’s head! I also appreciated how Amy focused on the residual effects of toxic relationships. No matter how many times Crystal told herself Scott wasn’t Neal, her default reaction was always the same. Her wants never coincided with her capabilities. She wanted to trust Scott, she wanted to believe she was enough but anything and everything was a trigger for her to go to her default and believe she was just filling in the time until something better came along. For someone who preached so much about body positivity and confidence, it was sad to see how easily she faltered when out under the microscope. The steamy scenes were more about the emotional engulfment between the two of them rather than the actions. They were soft, sensual, and intimate. It wasn’t just to people trying to find satisfaction, Amy wanted to display how they were intertwined mind, body, and soul. Along with her characters, one of my favorite things about Lea’s writing is her endings. They are so heartwarming, so considerate, so jaw droopingly beautiful that you don’t need to know what happens afterwards because you officially believe love conquers all. With the anticipation of her third book now heighten to new levels, I can’t wait to continue this influencer journey with Lea. She is a much needed voice, an artist with words, and a gift to the literacy world.

Funny and Introspective

4.25 stars! Loved the social media aspect of this and found it both funny and introspective, especially in regards to how self-love is an ever evolving concept for most of us. SET ON YOU does an excellent job showing how self-love and self-acceptance and growth is not a linear journey. I also appreciated how Crystal’s personal journey had to blossom before she could truly invest in her relationship with Scott and how Scott, in turn, understood and respected that. Great book for fans of The Brown Sisters series by Talia Hibbert; Girl Gone Viral by Alisha Rai; and Savvy Sheldon Feels Good As Hell by Taj McCoy!
