Ceramic Trivets

I called MACYS to tell them that the merchandise was broken when I received them so they told me not to send them back if they were broken because it is dangerous. So I threw them out and now MACYS is saying they issued a refund and they want me to send them back!!!! Which is it----????? I threw them out because they were broken so I can't send them back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
