New York Times bestselling author Peter Swanson pens a spectacularly spine-chilling novella in which an American art student in London is invited to join a classmate for the holidays at Starvewood Hall, her family's Cotswold manor house. But behind the holly and pine boughs, secrets are about to unravel, revealing this seemingly charming English village's grim history. Ashley Smith, an American art student in London for her junior year, was planning on spending Christmas alone, but a last-minute invitation from fellow student Emma Chapman brings her to Starvewood Hall, country residence of the Chapman family. The Cotswold manor house, festooned in pine boughs and crammed with guests for Christmas week, is a dream come true for Ashley. She is mesmerized by the cozy, fire lit house, the large family, and the charming village of Clevemoor, but also by Adam Chapman, Emma's aloof and handsome brother. But Adam is being investigated by the local police over the recent brutal slaying of a girl from the village, and there is a mysterious stranger who haunts the woodland path between Starvewood Hall and the local pub. Ashley begins to wonder what kind of story she is actually inhabiting. Is she in a grand romance? A gothic tale? Or has she wandered into something far more sinister and terrifying than she'd ever imagined.

Clever and quite dark.

The Christmas Guest is a novella by award-winning, best-selling American author, Peter Swanson. Nineteen-year-old American college student, Ashley Smith, studying art in London in 1989, realises she might have upset classmate Emma Chapman by going out with a guy in whom she’d expressed an interest. So when she’s invited to spend a week over Christmas at the Chapman family’s Cotswolds manor in Clevemoor, she’s relieved and a bit excited. The less-than enthusiastic reception she receives from Emma’s parents is more than offset by Emma’s handsome twin brother, Adam, for whom Ashley finds herself falling almost instantly. One or two things about the house and family make her uneasy, but she faithfully records the whole experience in her diary. Part two of this skilfully-plotted tale transports the reader to New York City, thirty years later, offering a chilling account of just why Ashley’s diary entries suddenly stop, and the aftermath. Clever and quite dark.

Holiday Novella with Twists

This was the first book I have read by Peter Swanson and I enjoyed it. I bought a couple more that I will be reading next. This was a short spooky tale that's perfect to read in one sitting during Christmas time! I always love a good novella and this one didn't disappoint. This book will keep you on your toes, I would recommend this book this holiday season.

Twisty

Favorite Quotes: It’s looking like I’m in more of a murder mystery now than a romance. Or maybe I’m in both. It’s all very exciting, plus a little bit creepy. When you’re young you think there are so many possible roads, but when you’re my age, you’ve been on the same road for a long time, and there’s no getting off of it. My Review: Well, that was unexpectedly twisty! I fell right into this one from page one and never saw any of this coming. While it was a short read it felt just right. It was brilliantly paced and populated with a collection of disconcerting yet seductively captivating characters that kept me a bit tense, yet invested and tethered to my Kindle. Peter Swanson has mad skills.

Twisty Thriller

This one is short but packs a punch!! I am a huge fan of Peter Swanson and this one did not disappoint! This is full of twists and surprises that are best discovered going in blind. So I am only going to say that this was a lot of fun and I really liked the story. A great Christmas read if you are tired of the usual happiness and fluff that the Holiday brings. 4 ⭐️

Tis the Season for a Delightful Christmas Thriller

Can we please get more Christmas-time mysteries? The Christmas Guest is the perfect blend of Christmas coziness and that ominous feeling in the pit of your stomach when everything seems just a little too perfect. Present day, Ashley Smith has just wrapped up her Christmas traditions when she comes across the diary she kept thirty years prior when she was a student studying abroad in London. With no family and no plans to return to the States for the holidays, Ashley is invited by her classmate Emma Chapman to join her family’s festivities in the Cotswolds. In attendance are Emma’s parents, her cousins, and her handsome twin brother Adam, who just so happens to be the key person of interest in the brutal slaying of a village girl. Throughout Ashley’s diary entries over the holiday, she questions if she is really in a Christmas romance or if it’s a cold, gothic thriller that only has one possible ending. The Christmas Guest was a fun novella that had me hooked from the beginning and immediately craving more Christmas thrillers, preferably ones like this one that are easily read in one sitting. While the characters were not necessarily likeable, I did feel like Ashley was one dimensional and we had to rely on present day Ashley to fill in crucial character information that should have been present throughout. Curl up with a cup of hot chocolate and devour The Christmas Guest today.

Short Unsuspecting Christmas Mystery

Initially, I wasn't sure about this book, if I even liked it, or where in the world it was even going! All of the Peter Swanson books that I've read thus far, I've really enjoyed, but I have read a lot of mixed reviews about at least his last book so that left me feeling iffy. However, it didn't take it lone (in true novella fashion) to turn into a true Peter Swanson story! I think he has perfect the art at a complete what in the world book? I think he has such creative, imaginative stories and that is part of why I love his books so much because it's crap that no one else would ever come up with and I LOVE IT! It's not like I thought I was getting a cozy Christmas story with The Christmas Guest but cozy was the furthest thing that this story was! With a novella, I can't say too much without giving away the story, so all I'll say is do yourself a favor and read this book! You won't be disappointed and you'll get through it quickly!
