Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Alice Walker's iconic modern classic is now a Penguin Book. A powerful cultural touchstone of modern American literature, The Color Purple depicts the lives of African American women in early twentieth-century rural Georgia. Separated as girls, sisters Celie and Nettie sustain their loyalty to and hope in each other across time, distance and silence. Through a series of letters spanning twenty years, first from Celie to God, then the sisters to each other despite the unknown, the novel draws readers into its rich and memorable portrayals of Celie, Nettie, Shug Avery and Sofia and their experience. The Color Purple broke the silence around domestic and sexual abuse, narrating the lives of women through their pain and struggle, companionship and growth, resilience and bravery. Deeply compassionate and beautifully imagined, Alice Walker's epic carries readers on a spirit-affirming journey towards redemption and love.

a true survivor story

i adore this book soo much i read it fast. at times i was confused and it took a while to get used to the writing style but this book is even more heartbreaking than the movie but in a powerful, black magic way. sisters united and celie discovers herself for the better. however going in i didn’t realize it would be so… let’s just say graphic. but it’s still soo beautiful and worth a read. really shows that in time things get better no matter the wait, praise God

Heartbreaking and Inspiring

This novel is beautiful, heartbreaking, and inspiring. Alice Walker’s characters are captivating and emotionally charged. The painfully brutal scenes of abuse and racism are balanced by the deep love and support between the women, as well Celie’s inspiring journey to self love and discovery. I would highly recommend this book, but please take the trigger warnings seriously before beginning the book.

Simply a Classic

The Color Purple is one of those books where everyone has seen the movie at some point in their life but has never sat down and read the book. Walker transports her readers into an incredible story about Celie and Nettie through a compilation of letters. A true tear jerker, love story, and historically accurate, this book truly has it all.

Tear jerker

I was not ready for what was to come in this beautiful, BEAUTIFUL story. Some topics are very sensitive, don't go into it thinking it's gonna be cupcakes and rainbows. It's definitely for mature audiences and can be tricky to read and decipher (you'll understand why once you start reading). A must-read!! This POV was amazing to experience and get enthralled with. I came in optimistic, came out crushed but kind of wanting more. That just leaves an open mind as to what could happen to the characters. If you had doubts, ignore them and get to reading!!
