New York Times bestselling author of On the Island, Tracey Garvis Graves, presents the compelling, hopelessly romantic novel of unconditional love. Annika Rose is an English major at the University of Illinois. Anxious in social situations where she finds most people's behavior confusing, she'd rather be surrounded by the order and discipline of books or the quiet solitude of playing chess. Jonathan Hoffman joined the chess club and lost his first game-and his heart-to the shy and awkward, yet brilliant and beautiful Annika. He admires her ability to be true to herself, quirks and all, and accepts the challenges involved in pursuing a relationship with her. Jonathan and Annika bring out the best in each other, finding the confidence and courage within themselves to plan a future together. What follows is a tumultuous yet tender love affair that withstands everything except the unforeseen tragedy that forces them apart, shattering their connection and leaving them to navigate their lives alone. Now, a decade later, fate reunites Annika and Jonathan in Chicago. She's living the life she wanted as a librarian. He's a Wall Street whiz, recovering from a divorce and seeking a fresh start. The attraction and strong feelings they once shared are instantly rekindled, but until they confront the fears and anxieties that drove them apart, their second chance will end before it truly begins.

Wonderfully Written

Whoa, this book blew my mind (especially the ending). I really enjoyed Tracey's writing style and her storyline for the characters as well as how she went back and forth between the two points of view. I felt that her showcasing of Autism was extremely well done and done well. I grew up with autistic family members, so I recognize the characteristics early on within the story. The ending really blew my mind, and I totally did not see it coming. I feel like Tracey writes extremely relatable characters and I have enjoyed both books I have read by her. It is time for me to continue to explore her backlist.

Story great, actual copy of book, not so

The story was great, but my copy of the book was terrible!! It was missing soooo many pages! I had to keep looking up a free online copy of the book to figure out what was going on in the story. Definitely a printing fail!

Beautiful Story.

Let me just say that this book, this book was perfect. I went six months without reading with everything going on with the pandemic. I bought this book way beforehand and finally decided to read it. Finished it one day. Cried. Laughed. It's a perfect mix to bring you hurt but then reassure you and make you feel good again. It is now added to my favorites list.

AMAZING BOOK!

The book "The girl he used to know" is a romance novel about a girl named Annika. Ten years after she graduated college she runs into her college boyfriend, Jonathan. This story tells about their love story and how (SPOILER) they meet and fall in love over again. It tells about the many bumps along the way, along with This book touched my heart in so many ways and I couldn't pull myself away. I wanted to keep reading and when the story ended I wanted to know more, and how their love story would keep on. I highly recommend reading this book. I have a hard time getting into books, but this one took no time at all!

surprising plot twist

I randomly picked this one up, and boy am I glad I did. An exciting but different love story, perfect beach read. Until approx 2/3rds through. Still good but you may catch yourself ugly crying in public if you avoid this warning.

It was ok...

It was somewhat of a challenge to get invested in the characters. Even the diagnosis of the lead character 2/3 into the book didn’t change my perception of her at all. When it came to the part of the story set in one of the worst tragedies in US history, it just got predictable and boring. Kind of glad it was a quick read.
