Great fast read w/ a great protaganist

I have read all of MHK's books prior to The Golden Doves and this one did not disappoint. I particularly enjoyed Josie's character - she is one tough cookie and doesn't let the jerk guys get the most of her. The action is excellent as well.

Such intelligent work...

Martha Hall Kelly just doesn't disappoint. The sheer breadth of her research is always stunning. She brings an intelligence to her work that is just is so impressive. This historical fiction once again brings us into the atrocities of Ravensbrück during WWII, centered on the dual perspective of Josie and Arlette, two incredible women who were arrested for working with the French Resistance. This story takes us through both their experience during their imprisonment and their quest for justice thereafter. This author always writes with empathy and determination as she takes her readers on a painful, yet redemptive journey. For fans of historical fiction and suspense, I highly recommend this new release!

Highly recommend for fans of historical fiction!

Bravo! Highly recommend for fans of historical fiction! I found this dual timeline story to be intriguing, starting in 1952 with flashbacks to 1943-45. It tells the story of two courageous young women and their mission to hunt down a war criminal. The author skillfully reveals their past, as she jumps between their present mission to the past, giving the reader tantalizing details of their former existence as spies during WWII. While I read a lot of books set in WWII, it was refreshing to have a slightly different spin, as the author takes her heroines across the world as they seek to bring justice to some of the criminals who escaped the Nuremberg trials. The author sets a high bar of excellence with her masterful research and her gift of storytelling. Not only was the story told in dual timelines, each was told from two points of view as well. With expert plot pacing, I found myself intrigued from the first to the last page, thoroughly captivated by Arlette and Josie's story. I realize that their story reflects the many untold stories of the real heroes of that time period. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley and the author/publisher. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Powerful Story!

Having read and loved Martha Hall Kelly’s first book, Lilac Girls and hearing her speak in Indianapolis, I was excited to read The Golden Doves as I knew the book would be well-researched. I was not disappointed. The book is told in two time periods, During WWII and after the war in 1952. We follow two main Characters. Josie, who is the daughter of an American diplomat and her mother is a famous French Jewish singer. Arlette has a baby boy. During the war, Arlette and Josie work as a team helping the Resistance passing messages by wireless to the British. When they are caught, they are sent to Ravensbruck. Along with Josie’s mother. Throughout the novel, we learn what happened at Ravensbruck. In 1952, Arlette is an Army Intelligence Officer stationed in Texas. Arlette, has traveled to French Guiana in search for Willy, her little boy. Josie is sent on assignment to French Guiana and is reunited with Arlette. Who can be trusted? This reader found The Golden Doves to be highly emotional. I felt like I was looking over Arlette’s and Josie’s shoulders. @fter reading an ARC of this book, I bought the Audio version to be able to listen to the story.. I really enjoyed it. I found myself talking to the characters. My thanks to Ballantine Books for an ARC of this book. the opinions in this review are my own.

Amazing historical fiction

Okay, I'll have to admit that I was a little intimidated by this book. Just the number of pages, 500+, had me cringe a bit. Before I started it, I didn't realize what that page count was So, that being said, it was the storyline that drew me to read The Golden Doves. Once I got into the story, the pages flew and I devoured it! The Golden Doves is told in dual points of view and dual timelines. We get to know Josie and Arlette as they struggled and survived the war and then again 10 years later as they are dealing with the aftermath of what they went though. This made for an exciting and intriguing story that drew me in and kept my attention to the very end. Martha Hall Kelly has written several other historical fiction novels, which are very popular. The Golden Doves is the first book of hers that I have read but it won't be the last. I highly recommend this one for all historical fiction lovers.

WW II thriller

4.5 Stars Martha Hall Kelly is one of my favorite historical fiction writers. Lilac Girls is in my Top 1o favorites. I find that I learn things about WW II that I knew nothing about. Dual timeline, told in two different voices, Josie and Arlette, young resistance fighters in 1942 trying to help end the war. Thrown together initially, they form a bond like no other. They become quite notorious, ending up being captured and sent to Ravensbruck Camp, housing women and children, and many horrendous experiments are carried out. Fast forward to 1952 and Josie is working for the US on Operation Paperclip, a little know (to me) operation trying to locate high ranking Nazi official before Russia can claim them as their own to use their knowledge. Arlette is working in a Paris cafe and still looking for her son that went missing at Ravensbruck. The Golden Doves are working together again but will they be successful on this mission? A beautiful, gut wrenching story told with compassion and honesty extolling the horrors women encountered at the Ravensbruck camp and the atrocities still being carried out in 1952 by Nazis hiding and protected in South America. It was infuriating to see how these high ranking officials were protected by many countries, the Vatican included, in South America and were sought after by Russia, USA and others for their knowledge on germ warfare. As a history geek, I enjoy reading stories where I learn so much. Remember history so we may never allow this to happen again. Thanks to Random House/Ballantine Books and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone.

Difficult subject but well written

The Golden Doves by Martha Hall Kelly is part of a series but I wasn't aware of the other books when I decided to read an ARC of this book. Maybe that's why it took me some time to really get into the story. Also the book jumps back and forth in a timeline so be aware. Once I figured this out I began to enjoy the book. I'm not a huge World War II fan but The Golden Doves provided a perspective that I had not explored. It's always interesting that women are given very little credit or importance in most of America's past conflicts. While I don't enjoy reading about war I appreciate the depth of the characters in the book. Going back and forth in time and discovering more and more about how women operated during wartime as well as how they provided a much-needed but little recognized service made this book one of my favorite stories of World War II I voluntarily received a copy of this book from Netgalley.
