#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER , NOW A NETFLIX FILM, A remarkable tale of the island of Guernsey during the German Occupation, and of a society as extraordinary as its name. Treat yourself to this book, please, I can't recommend it highly enough. Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love ,I wonder how the book got to Guernsey. Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers. January 1946- London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she's never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb. . . . As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends, and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island, boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.

I've sent this book as a gift many times

I've gifted this book to many people during the pandemic. It's a beautifully written tale of both the power of books and the resilience of people. It's also a triumph of the heart, and a slice of history I'd never known before. Highly recommend!

What a delightful read!

This delightful book ranks very near the top of my all-time favorite reads! I had heard about this book from so many different book groups I decided I had to finally read it and I am so happy that I did. This book takes place in 1946 after the German occupancy of the channel islands during WWII. Juliet Ashton is an author living in London who receives a letter from Dawsey Adams of the island of Guernsey after he found her name in a book that he obtained. He was inquiring about an author and she sent him a book by that author, thus beginning a correspondence between the two. This event snowballed from there! What a wonderful, charming book this is. By the time I was done reading it, I felt like I knew all of the characters personally! This book was hard to put down and is such a wonderful story that I highly recommend it.

My absolute favorite book of all time!

I love this story so much. It's real, romantic, witty, and so adorable. My signed copy is my most prized possession! I highly, highly recommend the book. The movie makes me angry, because the movie deviates from the original story too much, so stick with the book!

Loved this sweet story!

A beautiful story written through a series of letters that introduced the most lovely set of characters on the little island of Guernsey. It was different than other WW2 stories that I've read but still packed with emotion. I watched before watching the Netflix adaptation and loved both. Definitely recommend.

Terrific epistolary novel, just lovely

How did I miss this when it first came out? What a wonderful book, I tore through it in a day. I love epistolary novels anyway and this one reminded me of two of my favorites: 84 Charing Cross Road and Daddy-Long-Legs — the first because of the focus on books and reading, and the second because Juliet’s spritely voice reminds me of Judy Abbott. I just loved it.
