THE HAUNTING OF ASHBURN HOUSE by Darcy Coates I had high hopes for this one, but alas. I loved the creepy house at the edge of town, the lone grave tucked away in the woods, the eerie family portraits in the hallway… However, an unsettling atmosphere can only go so far. Adrienne, was so… dumb. And naive! I never felt she was in any real danger. Where’s the tension or suspense? Too much time was spent describing mundane tasks (making tea, feeding her cat etc.) which didn’t add to or further the plot. In fact, nothing exciting happened until I got to the last third of the book. Then it became a “cozy” horror with a zombie and meh —I just didn’t buy it. Also? Adrienne is in a dark house with electricity issues, no oil for the old fashioned oil lamp, no batteries for a flashlight, yet she never thinks to LIGHT the bajillion candles in the attic?! Gah! Honorable mention for Wolfgang the kitty (because I have a kitty named Wolfgang!); he was the best part of this book. The rest of it? Eh —it was fine, but not great. Rating: 3/5 ⭐️

Absolutely loved
Absolutely wonderful if you like slow buildup in a horror story. The author does a wonderful job at building the world and the characters. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a new haunting house story to add to their collection.

Little did I know
When I was walking through the bookstore a few days before halloween last year I was hoping to find something spooky to read in honor of the holiday. I saw this book highlighted on the bookshelf and bought it, and little did I know it would lead to a shopping splurge and reading binge of all the other Darcy Coates books I could find. This book started me off, gripped and hooked me proper to the point where I needed more and couldn't help but to buy more from this author. It was perfectly spooky, very much a page turner, and I loved the atmosphere.

A solid haunted house story--3.5 stars
Adrienne inherits a mansion with a haunted history and decades old mystery in Darcy Coates’ “The Haunting of Ashburn House.” I’ve now read a few of Coates’ books and while I enjoy all of them, for me, they lack the “and then some” factor that my other favorite horror writers deliver in their stories. While clearly in the horror genre—gothic more specifically—I like one other reviewers use of the term “cozy horror.” While Ashburn has some creepy scenes, paranormal elements and a murder mystery to solve, it’s all very comfortable. It’s like snuggling up with a cozy blanket by the fire to a great ghost story that’s more fun than scary. That’s a great niche for Coates that a lot of readers quite enjoy—myself included. I personally feel the scare factor is lacking, though and keep hoping the next book of hers I read has it. All in all, The Haunting of Ashburn House is an atmospheric ghost story about not just a haunted house but the haunted family Adrienne must confront. A solid gothic story with a likable damsel in distress, readers will enjoy the thrills and chills Ashburn elicites.

No *harsh vent, one woman’s opinion*
I wanted a horror book. I like the horror genre. No, it’s not completely the same kind of scare as a movie. But anything creepy will do. I haven’t finished the book yet, but I am 187 pages into in and on ch 28. So far NOTHING HAS HAPPENED. No progress, no change in the character development. The denial is so ridiculous and just for the sake of prolonging the reveal it’s EXHAUSTING. Will I finish it? Yes, I paid for the dang book. But it’s repetitive (maybe that’s the slow madness the author wanted, not in the character but in the reader), if you’ve read one chapter you’ve read 3/4ths of the book. I gave it two stars to give it the benefit of a doubt that by the end it will pull itself together.
