An addictive psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist that's burning up Instagram, Freida McFadden's The Housemaid is perfect for fans of Ruth Ware, Lisa Jewell, and Verity. Welcome to the family, Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I'll soon learn that the Winchesters' secrets are far more dangerous than my own Every day I clean the Winchesters' beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor. I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew's handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it's hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina's life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband. I only try on one of Nina's pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it's like. But she soon finds out and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it's far too late.

Got me into the thriller genre!

Loved this book. I was SO shocked finding out that Andrew was the real psycho. And - the way Millie got her (and Cecelia’s) revenge on him was so brutal but written a way that made it hard not to push through!

A well executed thriller powered by female rage

Quick Opinion 💭: A well executed thriller powered by female rage Why I Read This 📌: Recommended by my Mom My Summary 📝: A housemaid with a hidden past is hired for what seems like a straightforward live-in job, but the wealthy couple she works for quickly reveal disturbing layers of control, obsession, manipulation, and revenge. My Review 🔪: Beneath the fast-paced thrill of this story lies a sharp, simmering undercurrent of female rage, revenge, and justice reminiscent of Gone Girl, though slightly more subdued. The energy I adored throughout this book radiates the idea that if a man is crazy, he was born that way; but if a woman is crazy, a man made her that way. The mystery unfolds well through shifting perspectives and timelines. While I personally found it easier than others to spot red flags, remain skeptical, and guess where the story was headed, it didn’t take away from the ride. I treated it like a case that demanded to be solved and enjoyed it thoroughly. McFadden’s writing is poetic, addictive, and perfectly spaced for tension. If you’re into twisty thrillers where women take the power back, with a dash of well-earned revenge, you’ll fly through this one.
