An addictive psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist that's burning up Instagram, Freida McFadden's The Housemaid is perfect for fans of Ruth Ware, Lisa Jewell, and Verity. Welcome to the family, Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I'll soon learn that the Winchesters' secrets are far more dangerous than my own Every day I clean the Winchesters' beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor. I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew's handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it's hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina's life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband. I only try on one of Nina's pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it's like. But she soon finds out and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it's far too late.

5 stars!!

It was very well written had me wanting to read just one more chapter! On to the second one of this series, so far the second book is flowing right where this first book left off!

A great, easy read!

Full disclosure, I went to see the movie in theaters when I was about a third of the way through the book. Even having seen the movie, each chapter kept me guessing. The plot all came together in the last quarter of the book, and I couldn't stop reading until I got to the last page! Yes, it was that good. If you've watched the movie and you're on the fence, the book is better than the movie (as most books are), but the movie was a decent adaptation. The chapters are short and easy to read, which makes this a great read even during busy times of the week (fyi I flew through it during an exam week for medical school, so that speaks for itself). As for the characters, I love the way they're portrayed. Millie, Nina, and Andrew surprised me and kept me invested in what happened next. If you're looking for a short read to keep you on the edge of your seat, look no further!

Very Bad

This book wasn't for me. I didn't like the story and I felt the writing very pedestrian.

Very Bingeable Thriller!

First review of 2026 is here!! Been hearing about this one a lot recently so had to give it a read and I was HOOKED. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Guys I’m not gonna lie — I was so close to dnfing this one after the first third of the book. The pacing was slow and I just wasn’t the biggest fan of Millie’s character or her decisions. However, my best friend told me to stick it out until the twist and man I’m glad that I did. From part two onwards I tore this book up, bingeing it in a day. What a wild ride. Freida’s storytelling was gripping and I couldn’t put the book down until I reached the very end. I loved seeing how things played out, and even though the ending was a bit unbelievable for me, it was satisfying. Overall I took away a star for the slow start, but it’s been a while since a book has sucked me in so quickly so I had to give credit where it was due.

This one just was not for me.

This book did not work for me the way I expected it to. The Housemaid by Freida McFadden is very popular, but I found myself feeling underwhelmed as the story went on. I kept reading while waiting for the hype to make sense, but it never quite did. While it is an easy read, it did not hold my interest enough to make me want to continue the series. This one just was not for me.
