The Joy Luck Club is one of my favorite books. From the moment I first started reading it, I knew it was going to be incredible. For me, it was one of those once-in-a-lifetime reading experiences that you cherish forever. It inspired me as a writer and still remains hugely inspirational., ,Kevin Kwan, author of Crazy Rich Asians Amy Tan's beloved, New York Times bestselling tale of mothers and daughters, now the focus of a new documentary Amy Tan- Unintended Memoir on Netflix Four mothers, four daughters, four families whose histories shift with the four winds depending on who's "saying" the stories. In 1949 four Chinese women, recent immigrants to San Francisco, begin meeting to eat dim sum, play mahjong, and talk. United in shared unspeakable loss and hope, they call themselves the Joy Luck Club. Rather than sink into tragedy, they choose to gather to raise their spirits and money. "To despair was to wish back for something already lost. Or to prolong what was already unbearable." Forty years later the stories and history continue. With wit and sensitivity, Amy Tan examines the sometimes painful, often tender, and always deep connection between mothers and daughters. As each woman reveals her secrets, trying to unravel the truth about her life, the strings become more tangled, more entwined.

Long and Slow

Long and slow. Those are the words I’d use to describe The Joy Luck Club (and it’s honestly not that long, it just felt like it was). It’s a bunch of short stories that are interconnected, mostly people trying to explain why they are the way they are. There’s no real plot, though the first and last chapter are related and at least have a beginning and an end. I’m honestly not sure why it’s such a popular book.

Meaningful Cover

I read this in middle school and even then thought it tied together well the story of different cultures and generations.

Challenging Read, Recommend Though!

The Joy Luck Club is an amazing book however there are some thing you should know before reading! The book consists of many characters making it hard to keep track of everyone and who they connect to. I read the book with a club and we made a character chart with each of their stories and updated it quite frequently. The book focuses on mother-and-daughter relationships. The mothers want their daughters to be more culturized and know more about their heritage while the daughters don't really care to know or learn. Overall the book is good! I would recommend it.

My experience

I had to read this book as part of my English class , it’s not my taste or a book I would go for. But I’m general it was a book that you would learn a lot from. My favorite part of the whole book is that it was inclusive and gave alot of different point of views. I learnt alot about mother and daughter relationship and a lot about the Chinese culture and etc. To me it was more historical but I feel like some people would enjoy it. In conclusion it was an okay book not bad or good just there

Challenging Read, Recommend Though!

The Joy Luck Club novel focuses primarily on the relationships between a set of mothers and daughters. The novel showcases the mothers feeling very strongly about their daughters being Americanized and slowly being drawn away from their culture and heritage. In contrast, the daughters don't understand the need to learn about their culture or their mother's history. Throughout the book, the daughters struggle to find themselves and their mothers have an even harder time helping them. I really enjoyed this book, however, it is a more complicated read. There are lots of characters therefore keeping up with the story was a little difficult. If you have the patience and ability to pick up on small details and make connections throughout the book I feel like this will be a great Read for you!

Challenging read, but not bad

The joy luck club explores the adventures of mother daughter relationships, and Chinese culture. If you a have tough time following the plot in some books, this is not the book for you. It was challenging to understand how the characters and perspectives of the characters all intertwined, but once you get the hang of it, it’s not too bad. A great book for learning about Chinese culture, and how American culture can impact it.

Great Read, Highly recommend

This book has great storylines for each character! It might take a while for some readers to fully comprehend each relationship between the 8 women, but once you get the hang of it, it will become a more enjoyable read. There are multiple themes and cultural aspects shown in the book which not only makes the book a good read but helps you understand Chinese culture if you're not familiar with it already.
