Six were taken. Eleven years later, five come back- with no idea of where they've been. A riveting mystery for fans of We Were Liars. Eleven years ago, six kindergartners went missing without a trace. After all that time, the people left behind moved on, or tried to. Until today. Today five of those kids return. They're sixteen, and they are . . . fine. Scarlett comes home and finds a mom she barely recognizes, and doesn't really recognize the person she's supposed to be, either. But she thinks she remembers Lucas. Lucas remembers Scarlett, too, except they're entirely unable to recall where they've been or what happened to them. Neither of them remember the sixth victim, Max- the only one who hasn't come back. Which leaves Max's sister, Avery, wanting answers. She wants to find her brother- dead or alive- and isn't buying this whole memory-loss story. But as details of the disappearance begin to unfold, no one is prepared for the truth. This unforgettable novel- with its rich characters, high stakes, and plot twists- will leave readers breathless.

Amazing until the end

This book was truly amazing, idk what it was about it but I really really enjoyed this book. I liked the things you used to symbolize their memories kind of coming back to them, slowly. Like the clicks with Scarlett and the memories in a diffrent font for Lucas. I also liked how you started to see less of them as the book continues. I did not like how Avery and Lucas ended up together instead of Scarlett and Lucas. Very upset. I also did not like the ending, I don't know how to describe exactly what I didn't like about it, it was just not enough. It wasn't interesting enough and wasn't dramatic, like if your going to write a book with this interesting of a plot, make something crazy. I wanted aliens or something. It was just kind of underwhelming. But, honestly don't take my criticism to heart, I'm literally just a teenage girl, but I will definitely re-read this book.

Highly Recommend

The Leaving by Tara Altebrando is a great fictional book with a mystery that will leave you on the edge of your seat. The Leaving grabbed my attention even from the cover. I haven't read any other books from Tara but I bet they're almost as great as this one. This book has so many turning points and mysteries that it makes it hard to put the book down. The Leaving is about these teenagers who went missing eleven years ago, without a trace. Scarlett and Lucas are two of the six to go missing. No one knew where they were or who had them. One random night they’re returned to their families that they don’t recognize. And Max, one of the six that didn’t come back. They don’t remember who they are or what has happened to them, but little do they know that they are the center of the biggest mystery that has been going on for the past eleven years. I think Tara took her book to the next level by adding personalized writing to some of the characters. The Leaving has such a mysterious story line that you really don't know what's going to happen next. I liked the end, but there should definitely be a second book to be able to follow up on. I was definitely disappointed that there isn't a second book but overall I think it ended pretty well. I also liked how you see not only Scarlett and Lucas’s point of view, but we also get Avery insight on things. The Leaving is definitely a good fit for readers who like fun mysterious books with a ton of plot twists in it. I definitely recommend this book. Readers that like new interesting books will really like this book, because it's different, it's not like any other murder mystery book or in this case a fun mystery book that will leave you on your toes. The leaving gives you the problems that these teens are facing and the experiences they're going through without it being in first person point of view. It shows what Scarlett and Lucas are feeling in different ways, which you will see in the text. It not only makes it fun to read but it also makes it fun to see if you can figure out the mystery before you find out.

Lackluster

The cover of The Leaving caught my attention so I read the back and it sounded interesting. Sadly I ended up being highly disappointed. It starts out with five kids who disappeared eleven years ago being left in the middle of no where in the middle of the night. The only thing they know is their name and each one has a map in their pocket. Right away the kids figure out the map must be to their home and all follow the way home. Despite five kids being returned you only have the point of view of two of the five returned teens is crazy. For some odd reason the child who did not return has a younger sister who has points of view as well. Nothing is ever really explained just a jumble of thoughts and possibilities. I kept waiting for the actual plot line of the story to start but it never seemed to happen. I am not even sure what was really going on with the kids even after the big reveal. Key aspects were left out and all in all it felt like a badly kept journal the three kids were keeping. I also did not like the formatting. It made no sense, random things were thrown in such as / and large gaps like the character was thinking but not. The book was broken down into days which was an interesting concept but then the kids points of views jumped around so much I had trouble keeping up, I would have preferred anything but the system that was used to indicate a new kids point of view was occurring. Bold name, an indent, an underline, just something easier on the eyes to make the transition smoother between points of view. Since I did not care at all for the writing style I will not be pursing more work by Tara Altebrando.
