When you're a quilt instead of a sheet, being a ghost is hard! An adorable picture book for fans of Stumpkin and How to Make Friends with a Ghost. Ghosts are supposed to be sheets, light as air and able to whirl and twirl and float and soar. But the little ghost who is a quilt can't whirl or twirl at all, and when he flies, he gets very hot. He doesn't know why he's a quilt. His parents are both sheets, and so are all of his friends. (His great-grandmother was a lace curtain, but that doesn't really help cheer him up.) He feels sad and left out when his friends are zooming around and he can't keep up. But one Halloween, everything changes. The little ghost who was a quilt has an experience that no other ghost could have, an experience that only happens because he's a quilt . . . and he realizes that it's OK to be different.

🎃Being different can have its advantages!👍

An imaginative story with an adorable main character who learns to love an advantage he gains over his friends by being different. Other ghosts cower and keep away from humans, even during Halloween. But the little ghost quilt is inquisitive and brave, using his difference to get up close and experience some Halloween literally in the lap of a little girl. And then generously shares the story of his experience with his friends. The story was original, the artwork just right. I don't believe a preschooler will be able to resist the little ghost quilt's charm! Thanks to Tundra Books and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the story; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

An adorable ghost story!

I received an ecopy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Once, there was a little ghost who was a quilt instead of a sheet. Because of his thick layers, he couldn't fly as fast or as freely as the ghosts in his family that were sheets, but the little ghost that was a quilt still wanted to see the world and join in, so he did! The Little Ghost That Was A Quilt is an adorable story about a ghost that doesn't quite fit in. He is saddened by his differences but still yearns to experience the world, especially as his favorite holiday, Halloween, nears! The little ghost's adventures don't always go as planned, but he finds joy in them nevertheless, making this a hopeful story perfect for the autumn season. I adored the traditional-style illustrations. They have a slightly gloomy look that the bright patchwork ghost that was a quilt stood out on quite well and I especially loved all of the detail in settings, from the unique wood grain to the spooky shadows and spiderwebs!

cute story, sweet illustrations

The art in this is gorgeous- I love the muted palette, mostly neutral tones, allowing the few brighter colors used (blues, pink, orange) to pop. The soft, pencil-ish style gives a nice retro vibe, and there's lots of detail in the illustrations that adds to the story. Now the story is cute, it has some nice lessons about accepting who you are and it's okay to be different, but I feel there could've been more about how the other ghost tease the little quilt ghost and call him names, like maybe they could've apologized or something. I also feel bad for the mom and the little girl- she's going to be disappointed that the quilt is gone, and the mom is going to freak out when she realizes the quilt has disappeared- was someone in her house, playing creepy tricks on her? I could be reading things into this, but I'd be freaked out! Still, it's a pretty sweet story. #NetGalley

Being Different Opens Up Possibilities

The little ghost who was a quilt usually feels left out and different from his ghost friends. His parents tried to cheer him up by telling about relatives who were a red-checked tablecloth and a lace curtain. But that doesn't seem to help. All the ghosts look forward to Halloween. Those made of regular sheets can simply hover in the trees and watch the festivities. But the quilt ghost is too heavy to hover and usually hangs out on a clothesline. But the views aren't the best, so he devises a plan to fold himself up on a porch so he can see the action. But at the house he chooses, the mother of the first little girl who comes to the door mistakes him for a regular quilt and uses him to wrap up the cold child. They take him home, where he sees the candy sorting process. After the mother folds him up and puts him on the couch, he disappears up the chimney when she leaves and returns to his friends. They are quite interested to hear about his up-close adventure with humans. This book is all about being comfortable if you differ from those around you, especially in visible ways. The quilt ghost certainly feels the limitations of his unique circumstance early in the book, but his unique look allows him to have an experience that no other ghost has had or could have. I thought the book ended abruptly. I would have liked the book’s theme to have been explored for a few more pages so the little ghost is clear on the lesson and empowered. The illustrations in this book are mostly dark—very dark. The only splashes of color pretty much are the blue patches that make up the quilt ghost, bits of orange in some leaves and the pumpkins, and the ballerina dress of the little girl. I would have liked to have seen more splashes of color even if the basic feel remained dark, which is appropriate for Halloween. This would certainly make a nice Halloween book for a child who is feeling put down about being different. I wonder, though, if the book is somewhat limited in its use because of the strong holiday theme. All in all, I thought this was a relatively decent book about being different. I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Adorable

I loved this book! I fell in love with the ghost before I'd even read a word. The drawings are beautiful and textured, and my heart broke when the poor ghost who was a quilt slumped on the ground, unable to twist and turn. The book isn't really sad, of course - the text is funny, and it's written to celebrate children's uniqueness.
