#1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King's terrifying novella about a town engulfed in a dense, mysterious mist as humanity makes its last stand against unholy destruction—originally published in the acclaimed short story collection Skeleton Crew and made into a TV series, as well as a feature film starring Thomas Jane and Marcia Gay Harden. In the wake of a summer storm, terror descends. . . David Drayton, his son Billy, and their neighbor Brent Norton join dozens of others and head to the local grocery store to replenish supplies following a freak storm. Once there, they become trapped by a strange mist that has enveloped the town. As the confinement takes its toll on their nerves, a religious zealot, Mrs. Carmody, begins to play on their fears to convince them that this is God's vengeance for their sins. She insists a sacrifice must be made and two groups—those for and those against—are aligned. Clearly, staying in the store may prove fatal, and the Draytons, along with store employee Ollie Weeks, Amanda Dumfries, Irene Reppler, and Dan Miller, attempt to make their escape. But what's out there may be worse than what they left behind. This exhilarating novella explores the horror in both the enemy you know—and the one you can only imagine.

Good Read

I loved The Mist movie and the tv show so it was about time that I read the book. It’s not a long book so if you’re an avid reader like me, you can definitely knock it out in one day. It’s so worth it though.

*SPOILER WARNING* Fantastic book great read!

Without getting too into spoilers right away I would very much recommend this book. Like most Stephen King books it is worth the time. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have problems with it. One of my most favorite and simultaneously least favorite things Stephen King does is over describe everything. While most of the time it helps build the world and the setting it can also be quite boring and taxiing to read through. So if you don’t like a lot of ways that Stephen King writes then you might want to skip this one. Or at the very least try to read the first 20ish pages and see if it’s worth it to you. Because the way he writes it takes a while for the story to develop and move while also sometimes leaving the reader behind, as another issue I have with Stepehn King is present in this book. His almost constant way to flash back to things, while I will admit it helps build the character oftentimes it’s over done and you can get quite lost in whether this is current or another flashback as you probably lost focus on him describing a truck or a lake. But if you’re an avid King fan and can get past these minor annoyances then I could not recommend the book more. If you’ve somehow not read it already then skip the rest of this review as I will be getting into spoiler territory. I found the beginning quite boring, just another Stephen King setup introducing characters and flashing back to childhood memories but when the actual story start and they’re trapped in the grocery store as everything past that point is pure Stephen King genius showing how humanity devolves into savageness in the case of the end of the world. Stephen King’s writing is so detailed that you can almost feel the fog surrounding you. Nearly the whole time I was hoping the characters would get some sort of happy ending that whatever evil had begun to take over the world would soon be taken care of but slowly King crushed those hopes and gave me a dose of reality instead. All the way to the last word King wrote a compelling story with interesting characters, setting, dynamic, and every other possible thing you could want from a book. If you’re still reading this without having read the Mist first do stop now and take these words with you. “Read it”. Now serious spoiler territory the ending is sad there is no happy ending like I’d hoped because it was replaced by just… nothing. The ending is complete nothingness as the few remaining characters are left stranded and out of luck with no other choice but to wait and presumably starve. We don’t know if they were ever saved or if they died. The story just ends with nothing, there is no conclusion and I think that’s the worst part but also the best. Not a lot of good stories end ambiguously but Stephen King just pulls it off in a way that you will think about it for days to follow. I know I did. So if you haven’t read it yet and can get past all the little annoyances about Stephen King’s writing then I couldn’t recommend this book more. It’s a classic and a masterpiece.

Nobody does horror and suspense like the master

Nobody does horror and suspense like the master. Stephen King brings you monsters, gore, and human horrors. A simple storm and trip to the supermarket turn into a nightmare for David Drayton and his son Billy. A strange mist with horrific creatures comes from God knows where. And the people trapped inside the market are so frightened and confused, human nature takes over and create another kind of monster. Great book!
