A Old Man and the Sea, but what lurks in that sea?

Sunny beaches, colorful houses, plentiful oceans, what a wonderful country. Santiago, a fisherman in Cuba, heads out to the ocean one day to fish. A normal fishing trip would take around eight hours. How about eighty five days? The Old Man and The Sea, is a book written by Ernest Hemingway. Quite literally about an old man and the sea. Santiago, the main character in this book, is an aged Cuban man, who sets out to the Gulf of Mexico, with his young friend Manolin. Unfortunately, Manolin is eventually forced to leave the old man. Manolin continuously tended to the old man and selflessly put his needs above his own. Santiago is still determined to catch a fish. So he sets out to the gulf in hope for better fishing conditions. The novel will captivate you and grab you from the first sentence. Every single line of the book is written gorgeously. It “reels” you in. The book brings you through so many ups and downs, as an actual ocean would. An ocean of words, smoothly written with sharp twists and turns. The novella makes a fictional situation seem real, and by using vivid and colorful vocabulary, you really feel submerged, and you can see everything through Santiago's eyes. Hemingway is an extremely talented writer. His work is severely underrated even though he is one of the best writers to have ever graced this planet with his words. Whether it’s with his tongue twisting vocabulary, or his smooth transitions. Hemingway never fails to make a story interesting. The Old Man and The Sea is a story about a man whose spirit can still remain undefeated even after loss. This metaphor can teach all of us something, even in an event that doesn't pay off, we should still stay strong. Powerful words. These can cause us to believe that Hemingway was a very talented writer. He hides the moral of his stories deep in his books. So hard to find yet so perfect once found. His books can interpret so many different meanings. At the end of his book, he eventually catches a fish, just for it to get torn apart by sharks. So the thing he worked so hard for, he broke himself for, died. Yet at the end, he is still somewhat happy, which shows that he doesn’t hinder the negative aspects of life. Truly breathtaking book. The story is an outlet from reality, one I can get lost in for hours and hours and hours on end. Enjoyable for everyone, and a fun book. It is an escape from the world we have to face today. I wish I would be able to read this book fresh, for it has inspired me for a new dawn, Hemingways words instill a new hope in me. I wish I could get lost in this ocean of words again.

The Old Man and the Sea

I looked very forward to reading this classic, but instead was confronted with a child’s book. I understand the purpose of the story, but find it inconceivable this work could have received any award.

Life Changing

I will always regret not reading this when I was younger. If you’re looking for a simple and comforting plot that promotes patience, perseverance, and acceptance, this is the one. But be warned, I shed quite a few tears for the last few pages.
