Now an HBO limited series starring Ben Mendelsohn! Evil has many faces. . . maybe even yours in this #1 New York Times bestseller from master storyteller Stephen King. An eleven-year-old boy's violated corpse is discovered in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens-Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon have DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad. As the investigation expands and horrifying details begin to emerge, King's story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.

Suspenseful!

This was an amazing read. I am not a huge reader and tend to have a hard time getting into books. Stephen King captured my attention and kept my attention the whole book. I could NOT get enough of this book, seriously. I highly recommend it.

Never Doubt the King

Holly Gibney is an absolute gem. I honestly didn’t know how King could expand on the Bill Hodges trilogy and make Holly a more lovable, stand-alone character, yet he did. Never doubt the King. I also wasn’t sure how I could enjoy any book more than the Bill Hodges trilogy, and here we are. If I could rate The Outsider more than 5 stars, I would. This novel gave everything from detective murder mystery, to psychological thriller, to horror. It is everything I love in a book. As I was reading I caught myself thinking, “this must be where Markert and Chizmar got a lot of their I inspiration!” I also caught myself wondering if the ladies in The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires read The Outsider to gain inspiration for the death of their own monster. What an incredible read! Be sure to read the aforementioned Bill Hodges Series before picking up The Outsider. Also prepare yourself to purchase both If It Bleeds and Holly after you’re done here because , like me, I’m sure you will not be ready to let Ms. Gibney go.

Amazing!

One of my favorite SK books! It was so creepy and made you so uneasy, I loved it! It also makes you think! The ONLY thing I didn’t like/love, was the ending. I was expecting a… dark ending? Or even an open end, but that wasn’t the case. Did it ruin the book for me? Not at all! But I would’ve loved it more had it ended differently. Trigger Warning: discussion/mention of child rape

Amazing book

This book is a great read that has a great climax and a fantastic plot. It can contain many different and various challenges and horrors. With it also talking about supernatural beings it allows for the reader to be able to use their mind and creativity more as they continue to read through the novel and its many pages. The book can give the reader many mixed feelings about it as they read through it, but with the amount of suspense, action, mystery, and also character development. The Outsider is set in a small town in Georgia where there has been a murder commited on a young boy. The detective Ralph Anderon is given the task to find out who is the mysterious killer of the boy. After following many trails of fingerprints and other DNA left by the killer which led him to dead ends and areas of confusion, Anderson finally ends up with Terry Maitland as his suspect of the crime. Maitland is the local highschool baseball coach. With the help of witnesses helping lead to where Terry was, Anderson was able to find him at one of the baseball games and drag him out of there. After many court cases and interrogations, Terry is still saying his believable alibi and witnesses proving that he was out of town during the murder. Even though he was proven guilty he was still kept. The book gets its supernatural element by having a lady tell that she believes that it was not some people that killed the boy but a creature. As Anderson’s boss tells him to delete the evidence because it is clearly seen that Terry is guilty, Anderson does not comply and continues to stress over the case. This leads to a trial with Terry but before he is able to be there he is killed. The killer ended up being the monster of the human body.

It's an allegory.

It's a very clever allegory. I didn't even realize that it was one until the very last part, when the heroes confront the villain directly and something unexpected happens. The Outsider begins as a police procedural that's as gripping as any on TV (and is in fact a miniseries on HBO now). Then it starts to get spooky. The presumed villain seems to have been in two places at once, but that's impossible, right? If you've read the Bill Hodges trilogy then you'll recognize some of the characters referenced and included in the later parts of this novel. The pace is phenomenal, and the choice of genre and setting is a bit unusual for King at the start, but by the end you've got a classic King scenario where a group of hale fellow well met companions are sallying forth to do research and battle against the impossible. It's not my favorite of his works, but I did like it, and the ending had some poignancy that I appreciated.
