NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Fully realized, wholly absorbing and almost painfully suspenseful. . . The journey is mesmerizing. New York Times A woman receives an unexpected visitor during a deadly snowstorm in this chilling thriller from New York Times bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf. True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn't mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she's retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace. As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls haunted by secrets of her own. Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside. After bringing the child inside for warmth and safety, she begins to search for answers. But soon it becomes clear that the farmhouse isn't as isolated as she thought, and someone is willing to do anything to find them. And don't miss these other great stories by Heather!

Fast paced mystery / thriller

This is a multi-layered, suspenseful, tense, fast-paced & compelling mystery / thriller that is written in 3 timelines (past, present & in between). I found some parts predictable, however it didn’t take away from the overall story & I love how the 3 timelines came together. Chilling & atmospheric, I could literally feel the cold in my bones. This is my 2nd novel by this author & I found it as enjoyable as the first. Can’t wait to read more. Favorite Line: “It isn’t the dark you should be afraid of, the girl thought, it’s the monsters who step out into the light that you need to fear.”

The Overnight Guest

What a thriller! Heather Gudenkauf writes a mystery, The Overnight Guest, in a style reminiscence of James Patterson. The story jumps from events that happened over twenty years ago in the state of Iowa where parents were brutally murdered, a daughter was shot, and two teen-agers were missing, to a scary scene of a daughter and mother held prisoner, to the investigation of the tragic events, and the present day storm. Like Patterson, Gudenkauf, kept chapters short and riveting. The reader felt driven to begin a new chapter to learn what was happening. Gudenkauf would then skip to a different narrator and urge the reader to continue the story. So many twists and turns in the story. Gudenkauf displays the utter terror of women and what they must endure to have a life. But is all this turmoil worth the effort? A compelling tale!

A suspenseful mystery

“The Overnight Guest” by Heather Gudenkauf follows a true crime writer, Wylie Lack, that’s facing a little writers block. Seeking inspiration, she retreats to an isolated farmhouse where a gruesome family tragedy unfolded decades ago. Her stay coincides with a harsh winter storm, trapping her in the cabin. When she finds an unexpected guest, the night becomes a fight for survival and an exploration of the farmhouse's long-held secrets, potentially shedding light on the historical murders. Gudenkauf employs a narrative structure featuring two timelines and three perspectives, oscillating between events leading up to the past murders and the present day. A third undisclosed timeframe adds an extra layer of intrigue, keeping readers guessing. The mystery surrounding the farmhouse and its connection to the enigmatic overnight guest is a gripping puzzle, although the pacing dips in the middle before picking up for a thrilling revelation. As the secrets unfurl, the tension escalates, resulting in a satisfying climax. Overall, “The Overnight Guest” offered a quick read with a suspenseful mystery.

amazing book

i was looking for a good book with nothing in mind scanning over 15 odd books looking for something that grabbed my attention. i picked this off the shelf and thought sounds interesting enough not knowing how much i would love the plot, the story line, and the characters. trying to put all the pieces together while reading, i couldn’t put the book down. i’m not a big reader but wow i was captivated excited every night to read a few chapters and get deeper and deeper into the story. i highly recommend for anyone looking for a great page turner!

Thrilling

Wylie is in for the night of her life isolating herself in the farmhouse. When a small child appears, she doesn't know who to trust and how to keep them both safe. This book is thrilling and a great read! I obtained a free copy of this book from the publisher, but this review is my own.

Definitely a new favorite thriller of mine!

Definitely a new favorite thriller of mine! It's super intense, at times unimaginably horrific, and I was hooked on every word. I loved the multiple plot lines converging. Finally found a truly procedural, investigative mystery I couldn't get enough of. So happy to have this as my first read of 2023. It's so well written - I will definitely be reading from this author again.
