Sourdough De-Mystified

Maurizio Leo makes sourdough baking accessible to anyone who has the desire to bake good bread. The writing is clear and the recipes and formulas are easy to follow. The advice to stick with the basic sourdough loaf and make it many times is proof that repetition is the mother of learning. The explanation of starters and how to keep and tend them are worth the entire purchase. This is a book that I will use for years while seeking the perfect loaf. Buy the hard cover and leave it on the kitchen counter.

The ultimate sourdough book!

This book was recommended by the instructor of a sourdough class I took. I have learned so much and have grown as a baker. The instructions for each recipe link back to his website and videos. I am now an expect bagel shaper!! I highly recommend this book. I open it nearly everyday!!

The best sourdough guidebook!

I bought this book for my daughter in law, then had to order one for myself. I have several other bread books, but this one is the very best for any baker, especially if you are just starting your sourdough journey. I would have purchased fewer books, if I had gotten this one first. It does not disappoint. The recipes are all for things you will actually make, unlike other cookbooks that may only contain a handful of things the home baker will tackle.

Worth reading

San Francisco sourdough french bread, once prevalent in our area, is becoming harder to get. At one time 5 or 6, as I can recall, big time bakeries serviced our area. Corporate take-overs and consolidation led to the demise of most. There are 1 or 2 left that produce something edible but it requires a 15 mile drive to get. Having made attempts at bread and pizza making with inconsistent results I found Maurizio Leos blog post. I improved immediately. If I had questions he would return e-mails. When I heard he was writing a book I wanted in. I thought I had learned a lot from his blog but immediately more question were answered in an easy to understand format. I have to say that I don't have to travel as my bread is as good as some of the sourdough pioneers and my pizza is better than most local parlors. I have made several of the other recipes with good review. I am grateful that I found Maurizio and that he took the time to share his knowledge. I got better and I'm sure you will too. Marc F

Your New Bread Bible

If your sourdough journey started during lock down, this book is the perfect next step up! Filled with step by step guides all all kinds of loaves: from simple to challenging. There is a glossary, TONS of explanation down to the smallest details like ambient temperature in your kitchen. Incredibly well organized, there are even QR codes to take you to videos demonstrating the various techniques: a great option for something as challenging as breadmaking. I'm a novice breadmaker and this will be my new go-to reference guide: it breaks the science down in a way that's approachable and that will help you understand how to get BETTER at breadmaking. This will be on my shelves for YEARS to come. Get it for the recipes (from rustic loaves seasoned with olives to polenta!) but you'll use it for the in depth explanation and guidance. I was given a free copy of this book by Clarkson Potter in exchange for my personal unbiased review.
