Engrossing Family Dynamics
I loved following this family's story from beginning to end. The family dynamics were all too real, albeit dysfunctional. The father's religiosity and the effects it had on his wife and daughters was heartbreakingly familiar but completely engrossing.

Repetitive
This book tells a story that involves a family of missionaries going to the Congo to help a village accept God. The book proceeds to tell you about living in the Congo and about the African government. This reads a lot like a History textbook with a little bit of story. It's not that it's a bad book, but it just seems to go on and on about the daily ins and outs of living life in the Congo. I can't imagine telling someone about all the minute details of my day repeatedly. I personally would not recommend this book, but I am sure there are many people that will enjoy this and have.

Beautifully written
Barbara Kingsolver uses beautiful imagery throughout the book and her ability to adapt her writing between characters is amazing. The work and research needed to complete this novel is staggering. It is beautifully done. A new favorite.

Racist, hideous, drivel
Absolutely the most hateful, poorly written, rubbish that I have ever read! This book shows just how much contempt the author has for Black people. It is a bigot's delight. A full on attack on African culture; an assault on Christianity; and a salute to every racist, man-hating, self-important, entitled, queen of the low blows! Take a bow, Barbara Kingsolver, for managing to write something that is completely offensive, haughty, and entirely irrelevant! A Klansman couldn't rival your smug cruelty!
