NOW A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire are intelligent children. They are charming and resourceful and have pleasant facial features. Unfortunately, they are exceptionally unlucky. In the first two books alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, a lumpy bed, a deadly serpent, a large brass reading lamp, a long knife and a terrible odour. In the tradition of great storytellers, from Dickens to Dahl, comes an exquisitely dark comedy that is both literary and irreverent, hilarious and deftly crafted. Never before has a tale of three likeable and unfortunate children been quite so enchanting, or quite so uproariously unhappy.

When hope is brief

The Reptile Room is one of the most emotionally effective entries in A Series of Unfortunate Events. It offers a rare glimpse of hope before reinforcing the series’ central truth: safety is fragile, and evil often goes unpunished. Under the care of Uncle Monty, the Baudelaire children briefly experience stability. Each child is valued for their strengths, and the household feels both competent and kind — a sharp contrast to what has come before. That sense of security makes the inevitable intrusion of Count Olaf all the more devastating. What gives this book its lasting impact is not just the villain’s cruelty, but the persistent refusal of adults to listen to children, evidence, or logic. The tragedy that follows feels especially cruel because it was preventable. Bleak, frustrating, and deeply effective, The Reptile Room is often remembered as a turning point in the series — the moment where hope feels possible, and then is deliberately taken away.
