Really enjoyed this one

Slow pacing but loved the characters and the author does a great job of taking you to the Irish countryside. The mystery itself wasn't that great, but it didn't matter as I throughly enjoyed the journey.

Unusually Sub-Par

I'm somewhat surprised to be giving a Tana French novel a less than rave review which is, I believe, a first for me. It'd be a four-star novel, at least, for anyone else: interesting characters, a plot that moves along nicely, a mystery solved, and a few bonus surprises along the way. What's lacking is that immersive atmosphere with which her prior novels are infused; a sense, communicated so powerfully just through words, that you are indeed in Ireland, rich with the language and accents of the people. Though partly this is due to the main character being an American, even the other characters with whom he interacts, all Irish, seem just a bit less fully realized than the reader otherwise gets with all of her other novels. I'm hoping with the next she returns to her usual, superlative, form.

Fantastic!

Cal is seeking solitude and healing. He purchases a little cabin to restore in rural Ireland. He soon meets Trey a 13-year-old teenager who begs him to help find Trey's missing brother Brendan. Brendan is 19 years old and disappeared without a trace on March 21st from Ardnakelty. Hesitantly, Cal begins searching for clues, but soon encounters resistance from the locals of the nearby village. Although the book revolves around solving Brendan's disapperance, it becomes so much more. The emotionally gripping story between Cal (a tough police officer) and Trey (an abused teenager) reaches out and grips the readers. It's a fantastic read!
