NATIONAL BESTSELLER. From the bestselling author of The Night Circus, a timeless love story set in a secret underground world—a place of pirates, painters, lovers, liars, and ships that sail upon a starless sea. Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues—a bee, a key, and a sword—that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to an ancient library hidden far below the surface of the earth. What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians—it is a place of lost cities and seas, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also of those who are intent on its destruction.

my favorite book ever

I first read this book a couple years ago and reread it this month, and both experiences solidified this work as one of, if not my favorite, book I've ever read. There's something about it that speaks to my soul so deeply; I think anyone who has a big imagination, anyone who used to check their closets for doors to Narnia, or just anyone who holds a sprinkle of childhood magic in their heart - will be blown away by this book.

Big disappointment!

I read this book on recommendation from a friend who loves to read . It started out so slowly that I had to reread the beginning several times to check if I missed something. Pushing on, I slogged on through chapter after chapter, hoping to be delighted with nonsensical characters and situations. I should have quit reading after the first chapter. Instead, I read it to the end. This was the worst best selling book I have ever read.

Immersive Enchantment: Exploring the Depths of 'Th

The narrative centres on graduate student Zachary Ezra Rawlins, who discovers a mystery book stashed away in the university library. As Zachary digs deeper into the book, he finds the Starless Sea, a massive underground library that acts as a doorway to a myriad of mystical worlds and tales. Readers are transported into a realm where truth and fantasy are muddled by Morgenstern's fascinating and lyrical words. She seamlessly weaves stories inside stories, taking readers between many timelines and narratives. The book honours storytelling in all its forms.

New Favorite Book of All. Time.

This book is phenomenal. If you like to read, and appreciate intricate worldbuilding, complex characters, and an unforgettable storyline, this book is perfect for you. Interwoven with original fables and fairytales, the writing is a masterpiece of layers and mystical intrigue that will leave you guessing at every turn. Seriously. This book is impossible to predict, and it is incredible. Not only was it impossible to put down, but I couldn't stop thinking about it for days afterward as well. There are layers upon layers of brilliantly woven stories and they all pull together to create a beautiful, monumental, unforgettable novel. It jumped immediately to my #1 favorite book. I genuinely cannot recommend it enough!

A Bath For Booklovers

To say I loved this book does a disservice both to the book and to love. I read this book in 2019 or so, and I was desperately in need of *something*, though I wasn't sure what, and this book was *it*. But this book isn't for everybody and I know that despite my enthusiasm for the book some of my peers have disagreed about it; we'll get into that in a moment. The plot itself is a bit meandering. The protagonist, Zachary, follows a series of clues that eventually lead him to a mysterious realm of story-stuff. It is surreal bordering on poetry. There is a love story amidst the various discoveries, betrayals, oaths, and revelations, but it isn't given much room to breathe (though it is quite romantic). The real love story is between you, the reader, and the language of the story itself. This is what can be polarizing about the book. If you enjoy luxuriating in a bath of words, this book will capture you and refuse to let you go. I found myself stopping every couple of pages to just sigh and breathe. I have never felt more absorbed in prose. Those familiar with Morgenstern's *The Night Circus* will probably understand what I mean; bits of plot are divided by vignettes that give additional details about the world written in a loving, wandering voice that drips with emotion. If you enjoy this kind of thing, this will probably be one of your favorite books of all time; if you need a book more driven by plot you will probably fine the interruptions distracting.
