This is a very nice journey to sink into! The story is very well laid out, and continues to build, layers being added in throughout. I looked forward to reading this everyday until I completed it. The development of the characters was flawless. It truly is a story you too will hopefully enjoy. It is not a predictable tale. From an Author's perspective, this book took a lot of research to write, as well as time and thinking ahead to be able to build the layers of the main characters. I already started the Queen of Attolia, and very much enjoying it.

A great beginning to a new series
The Thief is a very cleverly written and planned story. I started it and thought it was good but as I read on and on, it picked up momentum and had such a surprising twist and a great ending that I decided it was going to have the five stars. It truly deserves it!! It is also the first of a series which I will really enjoy reading too!! Gen is the Queen's thief who, at the start of the story is lounging in a cell at His Majesty's pleasure and seems to be there for many years. He is approached by the King's Mage who asks him to help to recover something of great importance. He helps if only to leave the prison!!. He rides out with the mage and three other men, their identities and stories become known as they travel on together. Gen discovers as they reach their destination that the item he is to steal is legendary and possibly not real. He can't believe this but he goes on to seek it out.... Many thanks to Netgalley for the free arc book for an honest review. #Nwtgallwy, #hodderbooks, #m.w.turner

Delightful
I thoroughly enjoyed The Thief. It was cheeky and clever, humorous, delightful, and heart-warming. While the pace was slow at times, which I actually liked, I tore through this book in almost one sitting. The prose was beautiful — unique, but not too complicated for the sake of it — and the worldbuilding was simply immensely detailed and breath-taking. Enough for us to vividly picture our surroundings and the cultures, yet not feeling forced. I fell in love with the characters, the relationships, and while the bond between certain characters at the end took me by surprise, it never felt out of place. Moreover, there were so many twists that I hadn’t been expecting, and that were done so well! I cannot wait to read the Queen of Attolia next, which I have heard many great things about.

First book in an EXCEPTIONAL series
This series is one of my favorites EVER. It sets the gold standard for execution of amazingly well-crafted plots, complete with intrigue and wow moments. And the characters are so so good. That said, this book, Book 1, is a bit slow in the middle. Frankly I may have thrown in the towel if other family members hadn’t urged me to keep going. SO GET THIS BOOK AND READ IT. By Book 2, you won’t be able to put this series down!
