Gripping psychological paranormal suspense

When Rowan gets a dream job working for a rich family in Scotland as the nanny of their daughters, she thinks she's the luckiest girl in the world. But things quickly turn sour when she's almost immediately left alone with them in a smarthouse that she can't control. And what about the locked door in her room? And the pacing footsteps at night? Why have the Elincourts not been able to keep a nanny? What is going on in this house? Maddie, the eight year old, had seemed to take a shine to Rowan at her interview, but now that Rowan's there for good Maddie is giving her a hard time. Is she just testing out the new nanny? Or is it something more sinister? The five year old, Ellie, wants to connect with Rowan, but Maddie controls what they do. All in all, this was a great read with some twists. Told in letters to her solicitor, the pacing moves quickly and the plot is always moving forward. Definitely give this one by Ruth Ware a try.

Exciting and suspenseful

When Rowan is offered a prestigious live-in nanny position with a huge salary, she can't believe her luck. The job will require relocating from London to the Scottish Highlands but she's ready for a change and the generous salary will make it worthwhile. Soon after settling in she begins to hear ghostly footsteps in the attic above her bedroom at night and discovers previous nannies haven't lasted long in the job. She slowly begins to understand why — there's something very sinister happening and she's in terrible danger. . . The Turn of the Key is a really good read. The atmosphere is thick with a dreadful sense of foreboding. You know something isn't right and you're on tenterhooks throughout. The tension builds until it can't be contained any longer. With plenty of excellent twists and turns, you never really know in which direction you're being led (usually down the garden path!). It was an exciting and suspenseful read which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Interesting

This has been my only 5 star read of the entire year. I was intrigued from page 1. I kept thinking I knew what was going on and how it was going to end. But it wasn’t what I expected at all. The writing style as a letter was absolutely brilliant.

A story this haunting deserves one of my rarely gi

One of my very rare 5 star ratings I just finished reviewing Ruth Ware's In a Dark, Dark Wood where I said that although I haven't read all of her works, that one was my favorite to date. Now I stand corrected. The Turn of the Key is my favorite of her works. Not only was it riveting suspenseful, it actually had me feeling creeped out and scared as if I was there experiencing the events myself. Very vivid writing. The ending resolves the mystery but I am haunted with follow up questions of what ended up happening after. A story this haunting deserves one of my rarely given 5 stars

Suspense filled page-turner

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware Rowan Caine answers an ad for a live-in nanny at Heatherbrae House in Scotland. The old house is set up with indoor cameras and everything is controlled by an app, a modern day "smart home". On her first day there she finds she will be left alone for a week with the children, this becomes a challenge from the start. She realizes this is a mistake and a child ends up dead. She maintains her innocence in the death, but admits she has not been completely honest in obtaining this job. Told from Rowan's point of view in a letter to her attorney had me on edge. From the way she feels, to the challenges tending to the children. Add rumors of the house being haunted, the turn over in Nanny's, the need to know the truth. With twists, turns and secrets slowly revealed, we learn the harrowing truth. A definite page turning thriller. I was hooked from the first page until the end. I highly recommend The Turn of the Key to those who love a great psychological suspense.

Loved the Book But Hated the Ending

This was a great book that made me think of Daphne Du Maurier and Victorian Gothic Mysteries. Kept me entranced right up to the end. However, the ending was a huge disappointment. I really dislike books with ambiguous endings. I want to know what happened with the major characters instead of having to decide myself.
