The White Album by Joan Didion
First published in 1979, Joan Didion's The White Album records indelibly the upheavals and aftermaths of the 1960s. Examining key events, figures, and trends of the era—including Charles Manson, the Black Panthers, and the shopping mall—through the lens of her own spiritual confusion, Joan Didion helped to define mass culture as we now understand it. Written with a commanding sureness of tone and linguistic precision, The White Album is a central text of American reportage and a classic of American autobiography..

Good Read
My son, a voracious reader of any genre, really liked this book. He recommends it. I love that Macy's sells books from Barnes and Noble!
Profiles in Ennui
This collection of essays, written during the late 1960s through the 1970s, seems to encapsulate Didion’s suffocating sense of apathy. Regardless of her subject matter—the Manson murders, the protests at San Francisco State in 1968, Georgia O’Keefe, migraines, malls, dams, etc.—she manages to stir up just a meager degree of passion or interest. I’d always heard that Didion was a great writer, but that greatness is not on display in this text. Perhaps I need to read something else she’s written to genuinely appreciate her talent.
