Not like the first two

The Wild Robot is one of my favorite books. I was looking forward to book three and immediately bought the hardcover edition. But The Wild Robot Protects just doesn’t have the magic of the first two. I love the ocean and firmly believe in environmental stewardship, but this book is awfully heavy-handed for a kid’s book. It is more preachy and forced than an organic, rollicking adventure story. I question how well it would pique the interest of young readers. It tries to address environmental stewardship, pollution, transgenderism (Roz says she is programmed to “feel female” and meets a goby fish that can change gender from male to female), a parent’s empty nest phase, diplomacy vs violence… And in the end the most success is actually accomplished through violence. (!?) It was all a bit odd. On the plus side, Roz encounters many interesting ocean creatures and phenomena that will interest a young ocean-lover. But overall the author tried to make the book so uber-educational that almost none of the topics are handled particularly well.
