Bringing possibilities to unknown history

This new novel by the multi-award winning Lowrey is based on the actual finding of a prehistoric child in 1952 in a bog in Windeby, Germany. She supposes what the life of this child in the 1st Century might have been like. Lowrey alternates actual historical information in a chapter and with then the “story” of a girl she names Estrild. Another chapter of history and then the “story” of a boy named Varick. While fascinating, the story is at times a bit brutal as anthropologists glean the child died by drowning while wearing a blindfold. None-the-less, the imagining of the life of a strong girl who wanted to be more and then that of a creative, gentle boy makes for a thought provoking read and a wonderful book to discuss.
