An Instant New York Times Bestseller. A BuzzFeed Best Young Adult Book of 2020 Perfect for fans of The Last Magician and Serpent Dove, this heart-stopping debut is an imaginative Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920s Shanghai, with rival gangs and a monster in the depths of the Huangpu River. The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery. A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang- a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette's first love. and first betrayal. But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns- and grudges- aside and work together, for if they can't stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.

Literally AMAZING

These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends(2nd book) are literally one of my all-time favorite series and it definitely deserves its spot on the "New York Bestsellers" list. It's obviously a Romeo and Juliet retelling set in Shanghai China. The main character is Juliette who is Chinese and as we follow her through the story, we see and learn more about Chinese culture which is not only really cool but also important because it's representation of ones culture and who doesn't love representation. Following a POC character is a plus but the story is amazing. I was so intrigued and not to mention it's also enemies to lovers between Roma and Juliette. I was instantly in love with them and their relationship. The ending was so shocking and insane and the 2nd book was EVEN BETTER. The 2nd book is definitely better and was such an emotional rollercoaster with everything that you can love and hate. It was definitely worth it and I would do anything to reread it for the first time again. And if you really liked this series, you should read Chloe Gong's sequel series to this. The first book just came out and it's Foul Lady Fortune following Juliettes cousin Rosalind!!!

Stunning

Beautiful retelling of Romeo and Juliette. The reader is completely transported to 1920s Shanghai, which serves as the backdrop to this smart, gritty, and tense novel. Basically, it has all the adjectives. Film noir vibes with a twist of history and angst - an absolute must read!

Romeo & Juliet Retelling with twists, mystery&more

I have always loved reading “Romeo & Juliet”, especially growing up as a hopeless romantic, but this book heightened my love for it. This story transported me to another world, in the era of the 1920’s. I absolutely loved this take on a classic story. Chloe did an amazing job combining the historical aspect with the mystery looming throughout the story, and of course... Juliette and Roma were fantastic!

Great mix between history and fantasy

This was such an intense book. I know that I had a hard time physically reading it ahead of time, and I resorted to listening to it so I could get through it, but that wasn’t because of the content. If anything, I really enjoyed this story; like REALLY enjoyed this story, and I wanted to make sure I could enjoy it in the format that worked best for me. This was one of the best Romeo and Juliet retellings that I’ve ever come across, and quite frankly I prefer this a whole lot more to the original. Sorry Shakespeare. You can also tell that Gong ensured that we knew about the history about Shanghai during this time even if it was mixed up with the fantastical aspect of a monster in the river. The writing was pretty lyrical in a way that transported me into this world, and I just felt so immersed in this story. I personally don’t know who I liked better – Juliette or Roma – but I could understand where both of them were coming from. This war basically tore their family apart and honestly I don’t know if they will be able to break the cycle. I can’t wait to read the sequel when it comes out! It’s definitely going to have a pretty cray ending. Especially with what happened at the end of this one? Talk about a plot twist, and twist, and twist.
