Where the Mountain Meets the Moon: Grace Lin
This book tells the story of a girl named Minli, who lives in a place called the Village of Fruitless Mountain, which produces no crop and therefore income, vows to change the fortune of her family and of the village, and embarks on a quest. The tale of this strong-willed girl is bound to capture the hearts of many. Although this is not my favorite book, it certainly is a close second. The main character, a young, lively girl named Minli, is realistic and believable, unlike the protagonists of many fantasy novels I have read. Along with promoting inclusivity, with its setting placed in China, it tells the story of selflessness and the rewards of good deeds. For example, throughout the book, she chooses to help others over herself, even though she had more to lose. Minli is an extremely positive role model, and someone I think all children should be able to relate and look up to. Adorned by occasional images that help readers visualize the scenes being described, the tale is easy to follow, and not confusing in any way. Within the story, there are many conflicts within the story. One instance of this is an internal conflict between Minli and her mother. This conflict began when Minli was deeply affected by her mother’s unhappiness at the beginning of the book, and set out to change it. The character development that takes place following this is truly an intriguing aspect of the story, especially with how natural it is--the author writes it in a way that is neither artificial nor forced. Although the mother is not the main character, it is interesting to see her transform from a dejected, hopeless woman who disapproves of her daughter’s lack of care about their poor fortune, to someone who starts to appreciate the happiness within small things and the pleasure within what she did have, her family. The feeling of rediscovering a new book, and understanding more aspects of it that comes only with maturity is truly exhilarating. This is one such book; I read it many years ago, and rereading it was one of the best decisions I have made. While coming back to this story, I was surprised by the meaningful lessons, morals, and well-written plot that has drawn so many to this particular tale.
