Interesting read
Tells the story of Amy Tan and her family as she grows up into adulthood. Through essays about different subjects, she tells her story as well as her mother's story. She tells of her grandmother in China as well as her mother's childhood in China. She does finally tell her father's story towards the end. Her mother's story is interspersed through Amy's story of growing up in California then moving around Europe after her father's and older brother's deaths. They overcame a lot. I liked how this was set up through the essays. It is not a fast read but I was engaged throughout the book. As Ms. Tan tells her story she also tells her mother's story, so you know where she came from. You realize what her mother overcame in coming to America and marrying her second husband. The story is sad but I wanted to know. I liked so many of the essays. If this was not a library book, it would be on my keeper shelf. There is so much wisdom in these pages. So much to think about.
