A teenaged girl's disappearance brings her community's most devastating secrets to light in this compelling and nuanced psychological thriller suffused with small town prejudice and dark family secrets (Paula Hawkins, New York Times bestselling author) that is perfect for fans of Megan Miranda and Celeste Ng. The town of Whistling Ridge guards its secrets. When seventeen-year-old Abigail Blake disappears after a party, her best friend Emma is left with questions no one else can answer. The police initially believe Abi ran away, but Emma doesn't believe that her friend would leave without her, and when disturbing evidence is discovered nearby, the festering secrets and longstanding resentment of both Abigail's family and the people of Whistling Ridge begin to surface with devastating consequences. Among those secrets- Abi's older brother's passionate, dangerous love for a handsome Romanian immigrant who has recently made his home in the town's trailer park, her younger brother's feeling that he knows information he should tell the police, if only he could put it into words, her father's mercurial rages and her mother's silence. Then there is the rest of Whistling Ridge, where a charismatic preacher advocates for God with language that mirrors violence, all under the sway of the powerful businessman who rules the town.

Twists and Turns

This book was quite the page turner for me. It covered so many topics and situations within some very sensitive arenas. Abuse, discrimination, love, diversity. It went in so many different directions that I had zero idea when I started this book I would be reading about! Well written and kept me rushing back to read at every moment I could.

Totally creepy

Anna Bailey is a new author to me and this will not be the last book of her that I will read! It’s dark and twisted and scary and if that’s your kind of book then look no further!

Unrealistic stereotyping of small town America

I grew up mostly in small towns and have never ever encountered a small town such as the one this British author describes. Every character is deeply flawed, there's only one awful church in the entire town, the townspeople are so stupid and sheeplike they let the one evil pastor convince them to burn down a home with one of the characters inside. I bet the author would not like such a portrayal of small town Britain.

Too dark

I can’t believe the B&N employees recommended this as a beach read for me. It feels like a personal vendetta by the author against a group of small town people?? The bad characters are wholly bad and they make up the majority of the town. The good characters are misunderstood and wounded. The delivery of suspense elements was slow and clunky. I skimmed the last half of the book just to get to the resolution which was more terrible darkness. I read a lot of suspense so I’m not looking for literary genius but this one makes me want my money and my time back.

An incredible book, 5/5 stars!

I love the suspense/mystery genre which this book fits into. I felt that the characters were incredibly well developed, and the story line was well written. I found myself unable to put it down to figure out what happened, but I loved to read the story along the way. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in this genre. I am looking forward to buying any more of this authors books she writes!

Dark Story Reveals Generational Trauma

Primarily a murder mystery/thriller that also exposes where generational trauma can manifest and how it affects the family unit, especially those coming of age through a current social lens. It was dark but refreshing to read a story containing a different perspective on life while also giving voice to relevant family, social, and community topics and opinions.

Powerful and Compelling

"The unanswered mystery is what stays with us the longest," said one Stephen King. Without giving away any big plot spoilers, the sense of not just mystery, but sheer *unknown* about which King was talking is absolutely captured in Where the Truth Lies. Even from the brief description on the back cover, the reader knows they're about to be dragged headfirst into a story mined straight out of the imagination of one David Lynch of Twin Peaks fame, and Bailey's novel does not disappoint. Each and every character, regardless of their position on the spectrum of morality, is given the necessary amount of detail and backstory to demonstrate their status as flawed human beings, first and foremost. As such, there are even times where it may become difficult to separate protagonist from antagonist. A key part of the mystery is the fact that everyone has secrets; therefore, everyone is a suspect. While such murkiness might be out of place in any other genre, for a small-town "whodunit," it is a perfect fit, and ultimately works to the book's advantage, rather than against it. Seeing the more antagonistic characters receive their various dues becomes infinitely satisfying after so much emotionally-charged buildup, and even the big, final "reveal," such as it is, will leave the reader wondering long after turning the final page. Because "the unanswered mystery is what stays with us the longest, and it's what we'll remember in the end," as King said.
