Shoe runs wide

I’m a size 8M and based on reviews of running big I ordered a 7M. It’s too wide even with downsizing. There is room between the top laces and the sides. I’m returning as I don’t want to wear thick socks with them.

I normally wear 6.5. I got a 6, and they were more like 7
