Year Of Yes: How To Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes
Product details
Web ID: 4132862Amazing for Introverts
As an introvert, "quiet, and/or "shy" person, I felt like I just read a book about myself. Late in 2023, I decided I wanted to say yes to all the things that scare (specifically with speaking and engagements) and this book was literally right on point. This book was very easy to follow, funny, insightful, and inspiring. Shonda was very transparent, open, and honest. I don't know why anyone would rate it any less than 5 stars. And IF you are an extroverted person, you should read this to learn better about us!

Change Your Life by Saying "Yes"
OK, let me just be honest here: I am NOT a fan of Shonda Rimes' TV shows (after watching ALL the seasons of "Scandal"...): the main characters put themselves in ridiculous situations; they overthink EVERYTHING; and they TALK TOO MUCH. That being said... why did I think I would like this book written AND narrated by... Shonda Rimes? I'm really not sure. Except... I DID end up liking it, once I got used to the fact that she talks EXACTLY like her characters, which was horribly disconcerting at first for the above reasons. But I did enjoy hearing about Ms. Rimes saying "no" to social situations b/c of her fear of public speaking and the very private, inner world that she lived in, all the way back to being the little girl in the pantry making up stories w/ cans of vegetables as the actors. And then one of her sisters said, "Shonda, you never say yes to anything." That pulled Ms. Rimes up short, and she decided to say "yes" to everything for one year. And that year changed her life. Her paralyzing fear of saying "yes" to public speaking improved once she actually started public speaking; the accumulated weight began to drop off when she said "yes" to being healthy; she embraced the concept of being a single woman after years of having her characters doing so; and she said "yes" to playing w/ her children even when she was on a time crunch. But what really sold the story for me was when Ms. Rimes figured out that not only did she create stories in her head, she created the people in her life too. Like... some people weren't as she had written them. I've not been asked for money, as her friend turned ugly over, but I think that I HAVE been guilty of putting more weight on the length of a friendship rather than its quality. The name Ms. Rimes invented for her friend is the EXACT name of MY "friend" of whom I'm thinking. So it sounded like Mrs. Rimes was talking to ME, and not to herself. Mind blown. Concept embraced. 4 stars.

Really interesting and quick read.
I loved the honesty that Ms. Rhimes shared in putting herself out there and sharing all that she personally experienced during her Year of Yes. I'm not sure I could ever be that brave. She made a commitment to herself and she saw it through. And then shared all her trials and tribulations with the reading public. Way to go!
