Cute and fun for the holidays

SYNOPSIS: Matthew Prince is a snobby, rich dude, who takes it just one step too far and gets shipped off to small town, population: no one he cares about. Not only is he miserable to be stuck here, it's some sort of festive wonderland, and the cutest guy in town can't stand his stinking guts. Choosing to help save the day (and hopefully impress aforementioned hottie) he steps in to run the local gala, when they lose their event planner. CUE THE CUTENESS! I really enjoyed this book, it has a lot of cute festive fun vibes and I couldn't put it down. It's the kind of wholesome lovestory I enjoy reading during the holidays, and couldn't resist that adorable cover and fun title. 3/5 Stars

There are better holiday books out there.

After Matthew Prince buys an island on a whim, his parents cut off his money and send him to his grandparents’ house for the holidays. A city boy through and through, Matthew is not happy to be stuck in his grandparents’ small town, especially when he learns he will be sharing bunk beds – bunk beds! – with a local college student, Hector Martinez. Neither Hector nor Matthew are impressed by the others’ beliefs and actions, no matter how attractive they might find each other. When the charity gala loses its coordinator weeks before Christmas, Matthew steps up to fill the role with the hopes of getting back into his parents’ good graces and going back to the city early. As he and Hector plan the party, could Matthew find a little holiday spirit…and possibly love with Hector? I know the premise of the story is how horrible Matthew is before the small town (and small town boy) change his heart, but the first part of this was hard to read because of just how selfish he was. I like my characters to be a little more realistic. I did like the inclusivity of a character with GAD; that is when we really started to see Matthew more as a person. The grandparents were my favorite part of the story. I preferred the first book in the series, Never Been Kissed, to this one, but I look forward to reading the third book! Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audio ARC of this book.

A fun journey of self discovery.

You're a Mean One, Matthew Prince was a fun, sweet, coming of age story. Although it's more new adult than young adult, and it may seem weird to say it's a coming of age story, Matthew really did come into his own over the course of the book. Mixed in with the funny parts and the romance, there was a heartfelt journey of self discovery. It took a little to warm up to Matthew- a spoiled rich kid who buys an island?!? But once I got into the heart of the story, my feelings quickly changed and all I wanted was for Matthew to find his happiness. He had a lot to work through, and even though I wasn't that big of a fan of his parents for most of the book, I think they did right by sending him off to his grandparents. Although in age he's an adult, in actions he sure didn't act like one- he definitely needed time away to figure things out. I enjoyed Matthew's growth over the course of the book. It was nice to see him finally take responsibility for his actions, and also do good for a change- thinking about others, not just himself. The romance with Hector was another facet of his life that helped Matthew grow. He never really had anyone like Hector in his life and I think the feelings his was feeling got to be too much for him at times. But it was a good thing, and a good change for him.

gay hallmark movie vibes

YOU'RE A MEAN ONE MATTHEW PRINCE by Timothy Janovsky is a classic Christmas romcom worthy of a Hallmark movie. The breezy, comedic prose keeps the story light, but Janovsky doesn't shy away from the poignant moments that come right on cue. The world could always use more queer romcoms, and I'm happy I got to read this one! Thank you Netgalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca!

Christmas Carol meets the grinch

LGBTQ When Matthew Prince makes a financial Faux pas he gets sent to his grandparents in a small town called Wind River. Upon getting there he discovers he has an annoying room mate. Just when everything seems lost Matthew is asked to step in as an event coordinator, the catch is his roommate is his party planner partner... Firstly this book covers some pretty heavy topics like anxiety, but does so in such a sensitive way. I loved the character growth, how Matthew started out selfish, self centered, image obsessed but grew into himself while simultaneously rediscovering his awe-filled childhood self. The side characters were pretty amazing too and very gracious and all round the amazing people Matthew needed in his life. Hector perfectly balanced Matthew and guided him through some tough moments in such a caring and sensitive way. All in all an enjoyable book with lovely characters (although they don't all start out that way). I loved the event planning aspects and the way Matthew talks himself through panic attacks, it's very reassuring but also relatable. Thank you to netgalley and sourcebooks for the arc copy in exchange for my honest opinions.

Fresh queer holiday romance

I’ve wanted to read this book since I heard the title, and You’re a Mean One, Matthew Prince doesn’t disappoint. Timothy Janovsky crafts a satisfying queer holiday treat without it becoming too saccharine. The result is a holiday romance that will immediately put you in the mood for cookies and hot chocolate. 4.5/5 stars Matthew Prince is a spoiled brat who’s gone too far and purchased an island, and his parents send him to spend the holidays with his down to earth grandparents in Massachusetts. Matthew is furious about being exiled from New York, and loses what little cool he has left when he discovers he has a roommate. Hector is a college students who is living with them and helping at his grandmother’s bookstore to make ends meet. Hector hopes to earn enough to visit his home in Texas, but it’s not looking good. So he and Matthew strike a bargain: he’ll help Matthew plan the town gala, and Matthew will buy him a plane ticket home (assuming he gets access to his money again). But as they work more closely together, will they act on their growing attraction? Honestly I am a little tired of “embrace the holidays and you’ll be a better person” trope, but Matthew Prince is an exception. He’s so awful at the beginning of the story that he’s difficult to tolerate. But, Hector is a sweetie so if he likes Matthew, he must be worth spending time with underneath those couture clothes. And there is a good explanation for why Matthew acts this way, and the book does a good job exploring both his anxiety and his relationship with his neglectful parents. A huge plus for Matthew is that his sexually is simply a fact, not one of the many issues he copes with. In fact, Wind River is heralded as a town where all are welcome. His grandparents are adorable, and I loved their reactions to Matthew and Hector’s relationship, along with their personal baking competition. If you are looking for a great way to celebrate the HoliGays, look no further than You’re a Mean One, Matthew Prince. Janovsky’s charming romance shows how to have an awful character redeemed by love without the story becoming too icky sweet. This Grinch is definitely a fan! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

You’re a Mean One, Matthew Prince

Trigger Warnings: Drugs, alcohol, anxiety, cursing, anxiety attacks, simultaneous masturbation, sex, lying, blackmail, divorce, therapy Representation: Mental health: anxiety, Puerto Rican-American, Gay, Bisexual, She/they pronouns, polyamory You’re a Mean One, Matthew Prince is a contemporary romance about socialite Matthew Prince, whose parents’ wealth and fame keep him in the public eye. When Matthew makes a financial mistake to earn his parents attention, he is cut off and banished to spend the holidays with his grandparents off the grid. There he has to learn some humility, as well as share a bunk bed and bathroom with his grandparents’ guest, Hector. Will this grinch remain a Scrooge or will his heart grow three sizes? I absolutely adored this Christmas romance! I loved all of the characters and the plot line was absolutely adorable! All of these gay Hallmark-like books are making me so excited for the season and really hopeful for actually movies in the future! I loved all of the representation in this book! Mental health has such a negative stigma but the author handled it with grace and respect. I loved how self aware Matthew is and how he actively used the lessons he learned from therapy throughout the story. Representation like this is so important and the author really did an amazing job highlighting it. I thought the audiobook was very funny and the narrator did a great job voicing all of the characters. The story itself is quirky and cute, which was portrayed perfectly in the recording. Matthew was a very fleshed out and a mature character in my opinion. He has his flaws and makes mistakes, sometimes to the tune of millions of dollars. In the beginning, he is a typical, snobby rich kid with way too much money on their hands. I loved getting to the core of who he is and seeing the world through his lens. The coping mechanisms mentioned in the book were awesome too! I also really enjoyed Hector. My only wish is that he had his own chapters or maybe another pov book! Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I think it’s not only a great HEA and jolly holiday tale, but an amazing read for all readers! Just be careful about some of the steam!
