Uncomfortable Shoe/Poor Customer Service

I thought the soft footbed might be more comfortable than the ones I have with the regular footbed. So, I used the gift card I received for Christmas toward the purchase. The arch hit my foot in the same place and was not significantly softer. I returned these via mail. The return policy states that refunds will be issued to the original form of payment. I received a merchandise certificate which can only be used in stores not a gift card. I live two hours from the nearest Macy's. I contacted Macy's via chat and phone. I was told that a gift card cannot be issued. Customer Service requested the credit card info for the card that I had used for the rest of the purchase and stated the card would be credited, but I would not receive an email confirming this. Interesting! The card has not been credited. I have received Happy Returns gift cards in the past when I used a gift card for a purchase. I have always been happy with customer service in the past and I have frequently placed orders online. This may be my last purchase. I am not happy with the product, service, or amount of time I have spent trying to resolve this issue.
