Great Resource on Getting Happier

This is the first time I have read anything by either Arthur or Oprah, and I was surprised by what I felt. I appreciate the tenor of the book and the care that you feel reading as if Arthur & Oprah were sitting across from you talking over coffee. I learned some new things, and I appreciate the insight they share as I have never heard of some of this before. It allows me to be informed and to take action which is what I need in my life. A wonderful resource and worth having on the shelf as a reminder through the ups and downs in life.

Pretty Basic

This book echoes many other self-help books on finding happiness and leading a fulfilling life. The advice is pretty generic — counting to ten when you get angry, forgiving instead of harboring resentment, open communication, fulfilling relationships, a job you are happy in, etc. It is clearly written and to the point, which is nice, but it’s almost too simplistic and lacks nuance. Oprah contributes very little to the book overall. The few bits she does write act more like preludes to the upcoming chapter. I wish her warm, storytelling approach was incorporated more. In a nutshell, it’s underwhelming.

A good read

I appreciated the section about families and how to come together. There were several good ideas with steps you can take to help keep yourself living in a positive direction. Well worth the read.

Finally!

This book is so clear, practical and hands on. It meets you where you are and gives you tools to creating a happier life. Who knew brain science could be so easy to understand?! Or that I could become a happiness teacher? Not me! I will be sharing this book far and wide.

Let’s get happier!

How do we get happier?! Arthur Brooks poignantly shows us that happiness is not a feeling, yet positive emotions are evidence of happiness (and exist on a continuum, hence happier!). In this very readable book, Arthur brings the science and Oprah brings the storytelling, then is it up to the reader to do the work of practical application (make the effort!). How to Build a Life gives guidance on how to maintenance the inner life using metacognition to manage our emotional lives as well as prioritizing the big picture, key relationships and meaningful work in our outer lives. Let’s all get happier, what a radical notion!

Real talk for real life

Happiness is so hard to define and even harder to find in life. Arthur Brooks' insight and wisdom combined with Oprah's ability to tell a story is brilliant. Reading this is like getting life advice from two people you have only ever dreamt of asking for advice. Thank you for such a great book!
