Buyer Beware
I own a Fitbit ionic and have two major problems with it - it will not display the heart rate (HR) and will not provide an accurate (or even close) HR - the two main reasons I purchased this thing. if in doubt, do a search on "Ionic Heart Rate Problems" and you will find many disgruntled Ionic buyers.
Fitbit Ionic Vs Samsung Gear
Sleek sporty light watch to wear on wrist. During workout it doesn't bother so that's a big plus. Setting up the watch was easy. The first sync is pretty easy, but after wearing it for a week, while it was not synced to my phone, it took a long time to sync. Actually i had to cancel the data transfer couple of times and even once, removed the whole App and did a reinstall and re-sync. Be aware that the sync feature still needs refining and it may frustrate you if you are used to Apple or Samsung watch. Pedometer is accurate, also the Stairs feature is great. The sleep pattern recorder is pretty neat and accurate as far as i tested it. There are not too many apps built in, expect a Starbucks and fitbit pay. But there are plenty of Work-Out or Exercise monitoring and recording (swimming, running, weight lifting etc) . There is not a 3.5mm headphone jack so you will need Bluetooth headset if you want to transfer your workout music. Watch will alert you for incoming phone call, if your Bluetooth is On. It does not or cannot answer a phone call or email, like the Samsung Gear watch, which would have been very helpful. One full charge of the watch, will be enough for a full week. In my case, a full charge lasted for 9 days. Overall a nice improvement over Fitbit Surge, but i hope the future watch will have Phone/Email option and a 3.5mm jack.
Unreliable Functionality, Not as Advertised!
The Fitbit ionic is a poorly constructed watch that has not delivered basic functionality i received from an older Fitbit watch. First at point of purchase I engaged Fitbit support to get the watch to work. Next the watch was not able to deliver my daily steps on flat surfaces or stairs without going back to bring my iPhone along with me. After four months it will not deliver my daily sleep data hours after I have awaken with out connecting it to my Thinkpad. It will not download updates that appeared more than a month ago. It is dependent on the iPhone for reliable but uneven functionality. Fitbit should not have release the ionic watch to the public with completing required due diligence to deliver the smart watch represented in the product descriptions.
Good watch but....
The watch does not keep accurate steps. All other features are accurate at times. It seems like heart rate monitor is off at times also. I do like it just wish the steps were accurate. I exchanged it for a different watch without any problems and this on seem to be accurate more often than not.
Top notch item!
I got my boyfriend this one just the older version two years ago. The battery on it started to die a lot quicker, and it would shut off on it's own. Pretty unfortunate that even watches are now becoming like phones where they're unreliable so soon. However, because my boyfriend is a fitness fanatic, I decided to get him this one, as he's been eyeing it since it came out. He's in love with it and loves the new updates and capabilities. Here's to him enjoying this one for two years until the next one comes out!
