Sweet Laurel Savory is an excellent cookbook for those wishing to follow a grain-free diet. It is filled with recipes that most anyone would have heard of but have previously been somewhat inaccessible to those avoiding grains. There are several recipes for different breads and doughs including loaf breads, phyllo dough, brioche, popovers, pretzel bread, biscuits, and naan. Cuisine of virtually every kind and ethnicity are included. They are complete recipes in that for any dish, not only is the main recipe provided, but so are recipes for any dressing, condiment, and pasta or cracker accompaniment that the main recipe contains. Because of this, it really requires time and planning to fully prepare the majority of these recipes. Luckily, there are more and more grain-free basics that can be purchased should you choose and which will drastically reduce the time necessary. For example, I made a roasted cauliflower steak sandwich that was absolutely phenomenal. I prepared the cauliflower and the BBQ sauce but used store-bought bread. If you have even less time or a personal favorite bottled sauce, then the recipe will be even quicker. In addition to the cauliflower steak, I prepared a Chinese chicken salad, a roast chicken, and a vegan burger which were all delicious and nutritious. I also tried the cornbread and while I don't think it tasted exactly like any cornbread I have ever tried, it resembled it in texture and appearance and was good in its own right. What this book doesn't provide are recipes for anything sweet. Those recipes are included in Laurel Gallucci's previous book Sweet Laurel. All in all, this is a book that I would highly recommend for anyone, grain-free or not, looking for tasty, healthful dishes. Disclosure: I received a free copy from Clarkson Potter in exchange for a free and unbiased review.
