I don't give many books 5 stars, but this series absolutely deserves all of the rewards it received. I would rate it higher if I could. It is clever and heartbreaking and doesn't pull any punches. The magic system is interesting, the characters are compelling, and it made me feel every emotion on the spectrum. It was impossible to put down, because I had to know what happened next. It ticks every box for me. I wish I could wipe it from my mind so I could read it again for the first time.

Groundbreaking Sci-Fantasy Epic
"Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall; Death is the fifth, and master of all." The Fifth Season is a years-long winter of acid rain, ashfall and famine. Life struggles to survive. "This is a war with many sides, not just two. Did you think it was just the stills and the orogenes? No, no. Remember the stone eaters and the Guardians, too -- oh, and the Seasons. Never forget Father Earth. He has not forgotten you." N. K. Jemisin's Broken Earth Trilogy is impressive. It did, after all, win three Hugo awards. The premise is original and thought-provoking. The world-creating is spectacular. The style is cleverly mysterious. The suspense builds like a lava dome and explodes into cataclysm. One senses the presence of greatness. And yet... At one point the narrator says: "Perhaps you think it wrong that I dwell so much on the horrors, the pain." Well yes, yes I do.
