Some of the 125 tried-and-tested recipes are surprisingly simple, like her Vanilla bean Drop Doughnuts made with Greek yogurt, or the sweet and tangy baked chicken wings made with blackberry jam. Other recipes are nothing short of genius, such as the Kale Panzanella made with croissants, the Healthy white chicken chili made with hummus, or the crispy slow cooker carnitas made with cocoa powder. And just because the secret ingredients are surprising doesn't mean they're expensive or hard to find, either. 7 Ingredients or Less with Staples on Hand

This is the perfect cookbook when you want to cook something healthy and delicious, but don't want to spend hours in the kitchen. All of the recipes have 7 or less ingredients, and they are simple to make. The book is filled with beautiful colored pictures of the finished meals, and most of the ingredients are staples that are found in everyone's pantry. I love that there is a section for the instant pot too! I like that it will provide a twist in flavor and ingredients for my husband and I. We will use it to mix things up, and add different flavors and flair to our weekly dinners.

A Great and Fun Cookbook

Thank you Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and NetGalley for a copy of the eArc cookbook. This is a wonderful cookbook with simplistic photos showing delicious food. The cookbook has a great theme coupling normal pantry and fresh ingredients with an accompanying secret ingredient. There is one secret ingredient per recipe and for the most part these add complex flavors that take simple fare to meals with the flavor profile of a fancy restaurant. Some of my family's favorite's include the B.L.T.P (bacon, lettuce, tomato and pimento cheese). Sandwich, the beef bulgogi lettuce wraps, honey roasted cauliflower, chicken tikka masala meatballs., and chicken cutlets with apple salad. When a six year old asks for meals to be made again, you know you're working from a winning cookbook.

There's usually some duff recipes but I genuinely loved every one - presented in such an accessible way too I loved this - when it is finally published I shall be rushing to buy this - can't wait to get my hands on this!!! What did I love so much !! So many things!! I loved the way the book is sectioned out I loved the fact that the recipes are set out almost like recipe cards Each recipe is presented in such a way that makes them very 'doable' The photography is gorgeous and done in such a way it makes you want to make the dishes The recipes are perfectly pitched - can be made for everyday but also good enough to make for special occasions. Suitable to cooks who are both beginners and those more experienced plus families A fantastic all rounder !!

Simple fun additions to favorite dishes!

When I picked up The Secret Ingredient Cookbook by Kelly Senyei, I fully expected it to be a gimmicky, fun little cookbook to read with some strange recipes I'd never really make. Boy, was I wrong! This is a well-thought out, gorgeously illustrated cookbook with real recipes that happen to have a twisty little ingredient. Fish sauce in your roasted brussels sprouts? Zucchini in your potato croquettes? Yes! I have so many secret ingredient recipes bookmarked and I can't wait to try them all. The recipes are straightfoward and should not pose any problems for the average home chef. All the ingredients are simple to source, and no special equipment or skills are required.

Adventure Ahead

This is a beautiful cookbook with some gorgeous pictures which I always love. We eat with our eyes, right? This book starts off with some great tips that were new to me: proof dough in the dryer!?! And then we get into the recipes which their secret ingredients are this cookbooks niche. Most of the recipes sounded, and looked, scrumptious. Sometimes the secret ingredients peaked my interest and I'm looking forward to trying them ie Waffles with Ginger Ale, Brussel Sprouts with Fish Sauce, others the secret ingredients weren't that secret but still great recipes, and others totally lost me: Crème Brulee with Corn!?!? I would absolutely recommend giving this book a go and expand your taste horizons. Maybe just not with the Crème Brulee. I would like to thank you Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and #NetGalley for allowing me to review an advanced copy of #TheSecretIngredientCookbook.

Fun, tasty, & unexpected!

This book was fun! Each recipe contains an unexpected ingredient, hence the title. Some of them seem outlandish, others more normal. I can't wait to try them out!

Clearly and simply

The Secret Ingredient Cookbook is a very interesting home cook book to have. This is the type that takes known recipes, family favourites, and makes them shine thanks to an unusual ingredient and sometimes also a different way of preparing them. The tone of the writer is very pleasant, explaining how the idea for the book came about and how she worked at it. She shares her tricks to make things even easier in the home kitchen, she talks about her family life, how her children particularly liked some recipes, which makes those one some I particularly want to try as a parent of picky eaters. There is a sense of family legacy being passed on that I really enjoy. The recipes are explained clearly and simply. We can see they were retested many times by different sets of eyes. Almost all of them have very appealing pictures. Even better, they look good without looking overly complicated. In fact this is really a no fuss book and I would recommend it to beginners too, those who just want to make more family meals. There are some very unusual secret ingredients which actually make a lot of sense and I can’t wait to try them out. Despite not being a big breakfast person I am really tempted by the rosemary apple cinnamon buns, and the condensed milk granola. They really speak to me. I crave the pretzel knots, and the simplified versions of American Asian take out. Probably because I love Thai and Chinese food so much. There are few more luxurious recipes, like the champagne strawberry pancakes, and I might be in the minority here, but they don’t really take my fancy. I think apple cider would make a better “secret ingredient”. Perhaps because I don’t get the whole alcohol thing for breakfast. But also because pancakes don’t have a luxurious feel to me. Crepe on the other end… but I already like them with rum. A lot of recipes play on the sweet/savory scale, which my household is moderately a fan of, but that can easily be changed by sweetening most recipes a little less. But that’s of course a question of taste. There are also a number of dipping/dunking recipes, typical of America and Australia, and while they look tasty, my husband and my son hate touching food, so I know they are a hard sell if I don’t tweak it somehow into more of a plated food. Again those are all about personal preferences. Most of the recipes here are very affordable, featuring white meats, cheap nutritious ingredients like beans with easy to find “secret ingredients”. The book is lovely and I think it will be perfect for beginning home cooks, families who want to step out of bland tastes, presented better and healthier.

The layout is straightforward and each recipe has its secret ingredient well marked at the top of the page. ❀ TABLE OF CONTENTS: Breakfast Snacks Soups and Salads Pastas Entrées Sides Desserts Drinks ❀ INTRIGUING COMBINATIONS I have bookmarked quite a few recipes to try and I am excited to try so many of them, such as the Sweet and Spicy Penne Arrabbiata and the Adults Only Milkshake. These recipes have intriguing combinations that make cooking a bit more like a science experiment. ❀ EASY RECIPE TWEAKS I tried the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Snack Cake and really enjoyed the unexpected kick that adding cracked black pepper gave to an otherwise sweet and gooey treat.
