The greatest haunted house story ever written, the inspiration for a 10-part Netflix series directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, and Timothy Hutton First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. Beginner Horror Novel!

The Haunting of Hill House was an okay book. I enjoyed the story line, characters, and backstories. The ending was also a shock factor! However, I do believe this novel would be more enjoyable as a movie. The occurrences throughout the novel were underwhelming with the amount of built up suspense. Overall, I'd recommend this book as a starter for those beginning to read horror novels.

A classic!

This was one of the first truly scary books I read, many years ago. It kicked-started my love of reading, and of all things spooky. It’s also one of the few books I’ve read multiple times, and every time, it gives me a thrill. And although I hate to be that person, the Netflix series did NOT do the book justice. This one is simply a must-read!!

Just not that scary

I know this ia an older book and perhaps authors couldn't get away with what they can today but I just didn't find this book even remotely scary. I can't even say I ruined it for myself by watching the show because I only watched a few episodes half paying attention. For me, it was just too much about how the author shoved the poor little outcast of the main character down your throat. Every chapter she was crying or whining about something else and it just got very old. There was more "feel bad for me" contained in this book than actual horror.

THE HAUNTING OF HILLHOUSE by Shirley Jackson This classic horror novel has inspired multiple movies and shows over the years. I’ve watched most of them so I figured I should read the actual book. Perhaps listening to the audiobook wasn’t the best way to absorb this story. Maybe one has to read it in the dead of night for the it to invoke a sense of fear…? Regardless, I didn’t get any spookiness, thrill or horror. If anything I felt like a casual, unaffected observer in this weird paranormal experiment. I wish there was more backstory to Dr. Montague and his work. I liked Mrs. Montague and Authur’s scenes as it provided just enough comic relief. Was this scary? Nah. Creepy? Eh, somewhat. Maybe I just don’t scare as easily as I used to. In short I didn’t love it, but it was still worth reading/listening. Rating: 3/5 ⭐️

Laura Miller's Intro is SPOILERY

If you're reading this for the first time and are sensitive to spoilers (like me), AVOID Laura Miller's introduction. Whoever thought front-loading the actual story with her detailed recounting of its events had a complete lapse in judgment. This has surely ruined my reading experience as I am now anticipating certain reveals to unfold. Miller has a gross disregard for readers who prefer to experience the story themselves.
