In this incendiary mash-up of horror and suspense, a notorious slasher film is remade hellip, and the curse that haunted it is reawakened. Arriving in L.A. to visit the set of a new streaming horror series, journalist Laura Warren witnesses a man jumping from a bridge, landing right behind her car. Here we go, she thinks. It's started. Because the series she's reporting on is a remake of a '90s horror flick. A cursed '90s horror flick, which she starred in as a child and has been running from her whole life. In The Guesthouse, Laura played the little girl with the terrifying gift to tell people how the Needle Man would kill them. When eight of the cast and crew died in ways that eerily mirrored the movie's on-screen deaths, the film became a cult classic, and ruined her life. Leaving it behind, Laura changed her name and her accent, dyed her hair, and moved across the Atlantic. But some scripts don't want to stay buried. Now, as the body count rises again, Laura finds herself on the run with her aspiring actress sister and a jaded psychic, hoping to end the curse once and for all, and to stay out of the Needle Man's lethal reach.

The past is never really the past

I enjoyed 99% of this book. It had plenty of action and characters were easy to root for. It definitely provided a spooky and thrilling story. I didn't love the twist at the end, but the rest of the journey was fun!

Haunted film set

"Fire is always hungry and it doesn't care what it eats." (p.351) In this horror novel journalist Laura Warren returns to LA to report on the remake of a 1990s horror film. What nobody knows is she was a child star in the original film. Back in the 90s the film was cursed and many of the cast and crew associated with it turned up dead. Now, in present day, with the remake, the death toll begins to rise again and Laura questions if the curse has been reactivated. I really enjoyed this novel and could not put it down. The suspense was incredible. I was also really drawn in by the multi-layered main character. Winning did a great job incorporating Laura's trauma, both from her proximity to death in childhood and from being a child star. The silent resentment she carried for her mother was very relatable. There were a few parts towards the end that I thought were a bit corny, and they pulled me out of the action, and that is the only reason I'm not giving this one a perfect rating. Otherwise I loved it. I would definitely recommend this to all fans of horror and suspense. More reviews: @theliterati_list

Left me thinking!

There is a lot want to say, but I am afraid that would be a spoiler. So I will try to be vague. There was a lot of creepy parts that I liked and the use of other documents. The history with the movie added to the creepy factor. There were several parts that were a little too convenient and those took me out of the story. I am still not sure how I feel about the ending. It definitely left me thinking about the story after I finished it. So it’s good on that account. Overall I enjoyed the characters and backstory. It felt appropriately creepy.

Could not put down.

I found myself spooked every night reading it before bed. It is far from predictable and takes you every which way. The clip ins at each chapter make it a super fun read!
