True Rom Com at its best

Emma Wheeler desperately longs to be a screenwriter. She’s spent her life studying, obsessing over, and writing romantic comedies―good ones! She’s also been the sole caretaker for her kind-hearted dad, who needs full-time care. Now, when she gets a chance to re-write a script for famous screenwriter Charlie Yates, her hero, it’s a break too big to pass up. Emma moves to L.A. for six weeks for the writing gig of a lifetime. Charlie Yates doesn’t want to write with anyone. He doesn't believe in love. But Emma’s not going down without a fight. She will convince him that love stories matter? What if real life turns out to be so much . . . more real than fiction? What if the love story they’re writing breaks all Emma’s rules―and comes true?

I cried.

Review of The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Is it cliche to say that The Rom-Commers is one of my favorite rom-coms ever? With a title like that and an author like Katherine Center, how can it not?! It had me grinning, swooning, and crying (looking at you, Chapter 30). Like all Katherine Center books - I devoured this one! Katherine Center never misses when it comes to delivering witty banter, emotional depth, and a satisfying happily-ever-after. The chemistry between Emma and Charlie? Off the charts. The sexual tension built so naturally that I was practically yelling at the book for them to just kiss already! The miscommunication trope will always have me screaming at the pages to just TALK to each other but it definitely helps build everything up because what really got me was the emotional gut-punch in Chapter 30. I may have dropped a few tears. No shame. As always, Center crafts characters that feel like people you know - flawed, relatable, real. Characters who go through the same grief, loss, and trauma that we experience. The plot kept me turning pages late into the night, and the emotional payoff was totally worth it. If you’re a fan of romance with humor, heart, and a little bit of heartbreak that gets beautifully healed, The Rom-Commers is a must-read to add to your TBR list!

Delightful Rom-Com with Heart and Humor

Katherine Center delivers another engaging romance with The Rom-Commers, a charming, funny, and heartfelt novel that plays with rom-com tropes while celebrating the magic of love stories. Emma Wheeler, an aspiring screenwriter, finally gets her big break—rewriting a script for her screenwriting idol, Charlie Yates. The only problem? Charlie is a grumpy cynic who doesn’t believe in love, let alone romantic comedies. As they work together, their creative battles and undeniable chemistry make for an entertaining and emotionally satisfying story. I appreciated how the characters felt real and flawed, especially Charlie, who wasn’t the typical too-perfect male romantic lead. His grumpiness wasn’t just for show—it had depth, and Emma’s optimism challenged him in all the right ways. Their dynamic made the story fun to read, with plenty of witty banter and a slow-burn romance that felt natural. That said, the obligatory third-act breakup and grand reunion felt a little cheesy, forced, and predictable, but honestly, that’s something I expect from most romance novels. Despite that, the journey was thoroughly enjoyable, and Center’s signature warmth and humor made it an easy book to love. I gave this book 4 stars for its relatable characters, smart dialogue, and feel-good romance. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing me with an advance copy of this book. My review is voluntary and reflects my honest opinion.

Katherine Center does it again!

Katherine Center always does a great job of writing a romcom (no pun in intended) that keeps you page turning and sad that the book is over at the end. This was a perfect enemies to lovers that makes you hate Charlie in the beginning but man does he grow on you as the book continues. The way she was able to loop in the fact that she is a care taker for her dad was perfect, as some readers may be in the sandwich role, and feel a kinship with the characters even more. Ready for the next one!

Brilliant!

I have been a big fan of Katherine Center for a long time. Her books always put a smile on my face, make me shed a few tears and surround me with characters who I wished I knew personally. The Rom-Commers was no exception. In fact, I felt like it was my favorite book that she has written so far. I always enjoy the easy banter between the characters Catherine Center manages to get just right and the anticipation of romance that she brings to her books. The Rom-Commers possessed all those elements and more. I listened to the audiobook of The Rom-Commers that was narrated so well by Patti Murin. Her narration clearly distinguished between the many characters and easily drew me into the story. The Rom-Commers took place mostly in Los Angeles, California but also in Texas. For the last ten years, Emma Wheeler had been her father’s primary caregiver. It was a twenty four hour, seven day a week job. Emma’s father was in a very serious accident that had left him partially paralyzed on his left side. He also suffered from Ménière’s disease. Emma had pledged at the time of her father’s accident that she would sacrifice her own plans for attending college and any career aspirations she might have had so that her younger sister, Sylvie, could live her dreams. The plan that Emma had devised all those years ago called for Sylvie to switch places with Emma in ten years. Now almost ten years later, Sylvie had just graduated from college and she had secured a very prestigious internship. Emma was busy preparing a celebratory dinner for Sylvie when she received a phone call from Logan, Emma’s former boyfriend from her high school days and who was also her manager. Over the years, Emma had written many rom-coms that Logan had helped her enter in contests. She had even won some of the contests but Emma’s real dream was to write a screenplay. Logan had called Emma to offer her the chance of a lifetime job. Emma was offered the chance to work with screenwriter, Charlie Yates, as a ghostwriter. She was needed to help Charlie Yates rewrite a rom-com script. Charlie Yates was Emma’s idol. She admired and loved everything that he had ever written. How had Charlie Yates come to write a rom-com though? It was not his style at all. Of course Emma wanted the opportunity to work with Charlie Yates! She was totally on board until Logan told Emma that she had to go to Los Angeles to work with Charlie Yates in person for a minimum of six weeks. How could Emma leave her father for all that time? Who would take care of him the way she does? How could she not take advantage of this once in a lifetime chance, though? Sylvie gladly stepped up and insisted that Emma go. She would assume the role of caretaker for their father. In a matter of days, Emma found herself boarding a plane bound for Los Angeles to meet Charlie Yates face to face. If everything went according to plan, Emma would soon get to rewrite a rom-com with Charlie Yates. She had to pinch herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming this. Emma was more nervous than she had ever been in her entire life. What would Charlie Yates be like? She worried about his reaction to her curly red hair that had a mind of its own. Would Emma be able to accomplish everything that Charlie would require of her to rewrite the rom-com? Would Charlie Yates prove to be all that Emma had hoped he would be? Would her writing be good enough to make an impression on Charlie Yates? Would Emma’s father be alright without her? The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center was everything I had hoped it would be and then some. It was funny, sad, frustrating at times and had the promise of romance that I have come to expect in Katherine Center’s books. I really enjoyed Emma’s and Charlie’s characters. They were both flawed but so endearing at the same time. From the beginning there so many unexpected moments that played on my various emotions. The Rom-Commers was the perfect beach read. I didn’t want it to end. Without any hesitation, I highly recommend this book. Thank you to Macmillan Audio for allowing me to listen to the audiobook of The Rom-Commers through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Loved this sweet love story

Emma Wheeler gets job opportunities from her ex-boyfriend, Logan, and she’s just received the job opportunity of a lifetime: to re-write a screenplay for her favorite screenwriter, Charlie Yates. Emma is eager and ready to get to work, but Charlie doesn’t share her enthusiasm, nor is he turning out to be the man of her dreams. In fact he’s rude, arrogant, condescending and downright mean. Emma can’t believe she’s left behind the full-time caregiving responsibilities of her dad to embark on this seemingly doomed project; especially when it was so agonizing for her to entrust her dad’s care to her younger sister, to be treated this poorly by Charlie. She’s homesick and discouraged by the entire situation. But everyone has a story, including Charlie. Will Charlie’s story be enough to convince Emma to stay and complete the screenplay, or will she go back home to her dad who needs her and give up on the biggest opportunity of her life? I LOVED this romcom!! I’m a fan of love stories that build naturally, and The Rom-Commers accomplished this in a convincing, fulfilling way. I enjoyed the comedic tone throughout, as well as the various tender moments that tugged at my heartstrings. Emma’s intense love for her family was heartwarming, and her resilience admirable. Charlie was complex. One minute I wanted to strangle him and the next minute I wanted to give him a big hug. This story had humor, tension, warmth….all the things. A sweet love story with a thoroughly satisfying HEA ending. Loved it!!

I wanted to love it and i did! It was the book she was meant to write ❤️I went to Katherine Center's reading & book signing. So many moments made the event memorable, but hearing her say to her overflowing crowd of readers that this was the book she was meant to write made me love it even more. Her novels are sweet and have a slow build and her readers KNOW there will be a happily ever after ending. Thank you so much to #NetGalley for the opportunity to preview The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center. I LOVED it and already am looking forward to her next release!
