A New Way of Learning History
Refugee is an essential read that opens young readers’ eyes to the harsh realities of history in a truly captivating way. Alan Gratz masterfully conveys the experiences of Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud, presenting their stories in a manner that textbooks simply cannot match. As we journey with them, we feel every triumph and setback, deepening our empathy and understanding for their struggles. This powerful personal connection transforms history into something relatable and compelling. Gratz’s storytelling not only educates but also inspires a genuine concern for the challenges faced by refugees today. I highly recommend Refugee. It’s more than just a book; it’s an invitation to see the world through the eyes of those who have faced unimaginable hardships. This story encourages readers to reflect on their own lives and the importance of compassion. Its impact lingers far beyond the last page, making it an essential read for all young minds looking to expand their worldview.

The BEST author you can let your child read!
I was a very picky reader as a child, originally reading this book just for summer reading, at first thinking this book was boring and “just another ‘I Survived’ ripoff”. After I read this book though, my whole perspective on reading changed. I started to LOVE Alan Gratz and his works because the description was just what I wanted, realistic but not too gory (PERFECT for parents who don’t like their child reading graphic material). With this being the first Alan Gratz book I read and the start to many more in the future, I hope I can get as much children loving reading with this review because every child deserves to discover reading.

Great features
REFUGEE By Alan Gratz This book is called Refugee. It's a nonfiction themed book. It’s about how three kids and their families had to leave their homeland because their culture or religion was not welcome in the country they were living in. The three kids' names were Josef, Isabel, Mahmoud. All of these kids and their family’s had different stories on how they had to leave their homeland to find a new place to live because they didn’t feel safe or they would get killed or tortured. In chapter one Josef explains how in the night they heard someone breaking into their house. They were members of Adolf Hitler. These members take people that are teenagers and above. The members broke everything and took Josef’s dad and mom away to the concentration camps. In chapter 2 Isabel she lived in Havana Cuba 1994. One day she heard grass breaking and a ton of rackets going on outside her home. She thought it was nothing but then heard a woman scream and pistols fired. There was a huge riot going on in Havana. Guns firing, they had to get out. The story is mainly about how these kids had to leave because of these actions from people in their country. I think this would be a great book for other people because it tells a lot of the history behind people judging or discriminating against people by their religion or culture/ even how they look. This book made me surprised on how much stuff that went on a long time ago. I didn’t know that much bad stuff happened.

Refugee
I read the book Refugee by Alan Gratz recently. I really enjoyed reading this book. Usually, I have a hard time getting into books and reading books consecutively. This book made it really easy for me, it wasn't that challenging to get into but it also wasn’t easy. I felt like this challenged my reading skills very nicely. The book was a great story about three children and their sacrifices in order to survive. The author Alan Gratz wrote this in the best way possible and the reader couldn't ask for any better. It really showed the emotion these children faced but also the hope of getting over their hardships. Gratz’s book makes such an impact on a reader that you will never forget. It not only educates the reader but also promotes empathy and understanding. When reading this I was deeply moved by the characters and their experiences. Since we are learning about the Holocaust in school the story of Josef moved me the most now that I understand the horrors of that genocide. Overall the book Refugee is a wonderful choice for a younger reader struggling to get into books or just to read for fun. It shows us not to take things for granted. This book is a must-read for anyone who needs to have a more deep understanding of different experiences of people around the world.

great book
this book is about WWII and how people survived the Nazis. I got this book in middle school because we were reading it as a class and I thought it was a great book. The book went back and forth on the POV of these kids and how they would survive through bombings, drowning, and more. it showed how tough they were and the faith they had in finding a refugee camp. When we first started reading the book I thought it was boring but it got really interesting when all the action started to happen. I really enjoy books about WWII and learning about how people survived and what they went through at that time period. if you like reading things like this I would really recommend this book. It gives you the perspective of multiple different people that went through different things at that time.

This book was just ok. Not very exciting. It just kind of plugged along. Thought one of the stories might turn out to be good but nope. Oh well.
