Wonderful Dark Retelling Beauty & the Beast Story

It was a good retelling of Beauty and the Beast that’s way darker and sad than I expected to which is why I liked it. I liked how we get to explore more if Emberfall rather than being stuck in the castle and we get to see how the main love interest work together to help the people while trying to survive the enchantress. “If there is something within my power to give you, all you must do is ask.” - Prince Rhen “I’m not going to fell in love with you.” “You won’t be the first.” - Harper / Prince Rhen

Dark YA retelling of Beauty and the Beast

There are mixed reviews but I love Beauty and the Beast retellings so I went in blind. I got sucked in. It’s on the dark side: Harper comes from a very rough life, innocent women are kidnapped to break the curse, there is blood and carnage, etc. I was totally engaged but didn’t love a couple things. I think I’m actually more excited for the next book. There is a love triangle and while you feel for the Prince I was rooting for Harper and Gray (the king’s guard). They had a lot more connections. The plot was very interesting and I was surprised when Harper was from our world (again, I went in blind). I would have liked to learn a little bit more about her. The writing was fantastic!

Oh Man

Did not expect to like this book as much as I did. As always it took a bit in the beginning to hold my interest, but that's just me. I was captivated all the way to the end, and am excited to begin the next book. The ending was...wow. The character development, specifically for Harper is so interesting to watch unfold. YES YOU SHOULD READ THIS.

Best book

I loved this book! At first I wasn't so sure it would be good but it kept getting better and better. The next two after it are just as amazing. It was two perspectives and that makes it more interesting as you go along.

A Retelling You Need to Read!

Let me begin by saying that it has been a minute since a book made me brew a pot of coffee at 1am just so I could finish it as quickly as possible. Wow! I'm so glad I took a chance on reading 'A Curse So Dark and Lonely' because I have no regrets. I've already purchased the next two books in the series and plan on devouring them over the long weekend. In the kingdom of Emberfall, and cursed by a beautiful enchantress, Prince Rhen is doomed to repeat the autumn of his 18th year until he is able to win the heart of one he loves. If not, at the end of the season the prince transforms into a horrific beast that threatens to tear his kingdom apart. As the years pass, the beast reigns terror upon the kingdom, killing the royal family and all those who are unlucky enough not to escape. With a kingdom stretched to the limit, the sole surviving guardsman to the prince, Grey, is granted access at the beginning of each cycle to a parallel realm with Emberfall in order to bring those Rhen might court back to the palace. This portal takes Grey into the heart of modern-day Washington D.C. A world very different from Emberfall. The girls he picks come willingly, lured by the idea of shelter, stability, and a royal prince to woo them! These women are unattached and will not be missed while they are away, or worse, if they are eventually felled by the beast as the cycle continues. That is, until the night Grey is interrupted by a lead-pipe swinging heroine named Harper who sees him drawing a woman out of bar looking suspicious. Harper, in true murderino fashion, launches herself at Grey and is unwittingly is transported back with him to Emberfall and to the cursed crown prince. What follows is an incredible coming of age fantasy with a badass leading lady, a tortured prince, a loyal guard, and all the beautiful complexities of learning what it means to love. On its surface, 'A Curse So Dark and Lonely' is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast that takes readers back to the original source material and skips over any trace of Disney. This is a dark faerietale that immediately drew me in with palpable terror and urgency coupled with vibrant characters. Harper, Rhen, Grey - they made this book standout for me and the grief, sadness, and hope they experience in Emberfall, as well as in the "real" world of D.C., is relatable and touching. Another aspect of this book that I love is that Harper has cerebral palsy and we can see how she is not defined by her condition but rather it is part of her daily life. She is resilient and capable and I think Kemmerer has done a beautiful job of portraying an other-abled individual as the protagonist. That alone is a huge plus for me and we could always see more of that especially in YA fiction.

AMAZING!!!

Why.Did.I.Wait.So.Long.To.Read.This? This was Amazing!! Brigid Kremmerer's twist to this “Beauty and the Beast” retelling was brilliant! The story follows Harper, a girl with cerebral palsy struggling to survive the tough streets of DC along with her brother who is forced to do dirty work for their long gone fathers’ debt collectors all the while trying to keep their dying mother alive. One night she’s accidentally kidnapped and taken to the magical world of Emberfall by Grey, the Guard Commander to the cursed Prince Rhen, who is forced to relive the autumn season over and over again until he breaks the curse bestowed upon him by an evil enchantress before he becomes a beast of mass destruction. I was completely enchanted by the world that Brigid created even through the gruesome parts. It was magical, real and dark. I really liked the duo point-of-view from Rhen and Harper. I loved Harper! She is a badass, humbly kind and hilarious and I enjoyed watching her shake things up around Rhen & Grey. Speaking of GREY...is it possible to maybe love a side character more than the MC’s?? I kept hoping for a chapter in his POV LOL This was a slow burn romance full of action-packed and heartwarming scenes that kept me on my toes. And that plot twist at the end?? I cannot wait to dive into book 2!!
