an important and timely story
4.5 stars. Ignoring all the controversy surrounding the release of this novel, it is an important and timely read. Essentially, it is the journey of a mom and son attempting to escape a cartel death sentence and cross illegally from Acapulco into the United States. The opening scene does not spare the reader the horror and brutality of cartel violence, and sets the tone of oppressive fear that pervades the storyline from that point. The relationship between Lydia and her bookstore client that provides the backstory felt contrived at times. However, Lydia's love for her son Luca and her need to protect him are palpable even as they are caught up in their grief. The storyline is fast-paced as the pair try to stay ahead of their pursuers and navigate unknown territory, sometimes alone and sometimes with other migrants, with whom they forge cautious friendships. These other characters share their stories about what propels them to make their own journeys. The novel is filled with tension as the reader continues to find out who will survive and who will not. The dangers described are undoubtedly part of what desperate travelers face: theft, rape, hunger, illness, injury, accidental death, and the need to get past the cartel barrier to access the border. This story is fiction but backed by true stories, and images will stay with the reader long afterwards.

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE
Lydia Perez is the wife of an Acapulco journalist and the mother of an incredibly intelligent--and resourceful--eight-year-old boy. After a team of cartel-dispatched assassins guns down her entire family--Lydia's husband has had his eye on the cartels for years--she and her son flee through Mexico for the safety of the United States. Her problem: there are still people who want her dead, and--because the cartel's spies are everywhere--she can't even be sure which of her fellow migrants can be trusted. "American Dirt" is an adventure yarn, a coming-of-age tale, the story of a mother's love for her child, and a no-holds-barred look at the migrant life. Cummins writes with an extraordinary eye for detail--you'll feel every blast of the blazing desert sun, cheer (and maybe even shed a tear or two) for all the superbly drawn characters--and she knows how to spring the occasional surprise, as well. A superior novel in every way, and if you've ever wanted to know more about the border crisis, also an instructive one. Don't miss it.

I will never forget this book!
Jeanine Cummins has created something special here. I loved this book with every bit of my being. As an almost bilingual reader this one had me from the start. With brief smatterings of Spanish, I had a blast with this one. Cummins has captured the very real, wildly horrific reality that faces those Mexican-American families left with no choice other than illegal migration to the US to ensure their safety. I cared so deeply about these characters and their unpromised fate. I stayed up way too late, heart racing, many nights with this book! A consistent go-to recommendation for me. 10/10!!
