A great start to a fantasy series!

The series a little darker than my normal fantasy vibe but I’m still really enjoying the journey! Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Read if you enjoy: - dark fantasy - HIGH stakes - Slowwwww burn romance, but not the main plot - Dystopian series

Great Read!

This book was brilliantly written. The author takes the reader into the story and grabs you buy the throat from the beginning. You join the characters in their fear and anger from the beginning and run with them in their discovery of bravery and the search for freedom in not only their lives but their beliefs. I found it a smart and interesting way to show the parallels of real world suppression of life and liberty in a fascinating and exciting fictional story.

Enthralling tale!

This book let me get away from reality and feel like I was in the story. The world building is amazing. I got so invested in the characters stories that I never wanted it to end. I never saw what was coming and was always surprised. Leia and Elias’ story is beautiful inside and out.

Cutthroat Empire

An Ember in the Ashes has one of the most cutthroat book worlds I’ve read to date. A lot of fantasy fiction books have death and villains but none as ruthless as those in the Empire's military Academy. The book world seemed so real that I felt just as strongly about things as Elias and Laia and maybe that tells of how good Sabaa Tahir is at her job lol I couldn’t predict what would happen to the characters in the book and liked that a lot. All in all a good read!

Awesome description

I bought this towards the beginning of Janurary and was very happy with it. I was happy with how the author switched POVS and showed the emotions of the characters. They also put so much description into everything which I absolutely loved. Expecially the the love connection between the two main characters *chefs kiss*

One of the most original YA novels out there!

I’ll keep this review relatively short (edit: okay, that’s a lie) and spoiler-free—but not so much where I don’t give enough detail! So, first off, this book was not at all what I expected. I purchased it (audiobook version) because I liked the narrators—and I ended up LOVING the book! The characters are so unique: no, the female characters aren’t all these highly intelligent, abnormally strong (physically and emotionally), otherworldly feminist beings like in most YAs. And no, Elias (the lead male) isn’t this emotionless, quiet, dark, murderous loner like most males in YAs (of course, not all). They’re actual relatable characters who maybe whine a bit much, but hey, I’m not complaining! I honestly love characters with a lot of weaknesses and I like dainty and feminine female characters (perhaps because I’m so used to them being fierce and killing-machines). So because the girls were ACTUALLY like girls, I could relate. The story is definitely character-driven, which I don’t mind at all since I liked all of the characters. HERE’S A WARNING THAT’S A SLIGHT SPOILER: One of the characters—whom I liked a lot—sort of disappears from the story in middle of the second novel. Now, this was annoying to me and really ruined the ENTIRE series for me. So, if you’re looking for a great SERIES, this may not be the best option. The first novel is fantastic, but the way the author made a character sort of vanish from the plot really did it for me. I’ll still be finishing, but it certainly won’t be as enjoyable. I still recommend you read this gem, but don’t expect to love ALL of the books in this series. You’ll see what I mean if you decide to read—it’s pretty noticeable. (And no, it’s not the death of a character, although it’s even worse).

Purchased on a whim, and thoroughly enjoyed.

An excellent book for the author’s debut, the first installment to the “Ember In The Ashes” series was heart wrenching as you have two lead characters, Laia a scholar fighting to save her brother whom was branded as a traitor and Elias a supposed champion yet he wants nothing to do with what is to become. An assassin. Both find that their destinies are intertwined as they struggle against their current dilemmas and fight to save themselves and and those they love.

An Ember in the Ashes

Laia is a Scholar living with her family under the brutal Martial Empire. Laia calls on the Resistance, an anti-Empire group to help break out her brother Darin from prison after agreeing to help the Resistance infiltrate an infamous military school. Laia meets Elias at the Blackcliff Academy who has been chosen to take the Trials to determine who the next ruler of the Empire will be. But Elias wants nothing to do with the Empire. I really enjoyed reading this young adult fiction by Sabaa Tahir.
